Ready to birth?
    #16820681 - 09/09/12 10:57 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Hello!

I wanted to start a separate thread to get some opinions on when I should birth these, since I may need to do it in the morning.  Pins are present on 3 out of 12 jars, only on GT variety.

Thanks in advance everyone.

Day 31

I think for the most part they look ready as long as all those brown spots are just where you Verm layer slid down the side of the jars...is there any spots of brf that is uncolonized?

There are two cakes that have are not as uniformly colonized as the ones I posted.  One in particular does look a little more behind than the other.

If I were going to go for it tomorrow, I suppose I would wait on those two, and go ahead with the rest.

Now that I looked at the pic some more (sorry I post/browse off my cell phone) I noticed there's def spots close to the Verm layer that does not look very solid with mycellium....make sure every spot other than the verm layer is "solid" with deep white mycellium.

They look ready to me.

How long have they been fully colonized?
Give them a minimum of one week after being fully colonized until you birth them.

If it's pinning, it's either done and ready to fruit, or contaminated. (Which I don't believe contamination is the case here.)

Awesome, you guys -- thanks for the advice.  I'm getting ready to inspect them this morning.

Do not remove the pins, just be gentle dunking the cakes.
Instead of literally rolling in Vermiculite, sprinkle it
over the cake.

That is a ton of visible verm! Make sure if you birth you wash and or remove any uncolonized portions of verm, it usually just washes off easy. Those are some nice looking cakes bud  I'd stack them for a montage of beauty's.

Stacking in the FC? If you do be sure to place something
in between the cakes. Or the lower ones tend to suck the
moisture out of the higher ones. And attempt to colonize
all together. Which will slow the fruiting process.

You guys are great, I'm totally feeling better.

I'm all about a montage of beauty -- stack 'em up jar on top of jar?  Make like a wall of jars?

So, I'm going to birth at least, the ones that are pinning.

Birthed the two, decided I'd wait a little longer on the rest.  I'd say they are ready.  Under that thin layer of verm, they're firm as hell - they 'feel' colonized.

Which makes me think the others may be ready too.  What do you think?

It wouldn't hurt the others. Worse
case scenario is they sit in your FC for a few
extra days doing nothing. Which would lead them
to dry out sooner once fruiting begins.

Use your discretion. It's suggested to allow them 1 week.

Take them out of the fridge. Cold shocking Cubensis
is outdated information. There tropical fruits.

word up, I got 'em out the fridge.

I realized I didn't cut any uncolonized off...I don't think there's much, if anything to cut.

Got the other 10 jars still sitting, sans light.  ill make my FC sometime today, and get those  in there tomorrow.

Thanks again everyone.

: D  I rinsed em under low pressure tap, and gave them a little finger scrub.

As I look at them closer, I can see the mycelium in certain places, under that thin layer.  So I think a soak and another rinse should get it off.  I'll try scraping lightly with a sterile knife if the fingers don't get it.

And I'm gonna try and go 24 hours on this room temp soak.  They just look a little delicate sitting in there right now.  So I'll go as long as I can, up to 24 hours, or until I see any kind of degradation in the cakes.
