SWIM has 3 liquid cultures going right now. One is a jeepers creepers strain, which came off of a spore ring from FSRE (spore ring was a year old but it was kept in a sealed bag in the dark for the entire year). The lc was prepared following a shroomery tek, using karo syrup and a small amount of potato water and pressure cooked to sterilization. The other two were also made by following teks online, but the jars were made with honey and were boiled to sterilization. Those two lc's were spore syringes, one of cambodians and one of golden teachers.
The creepers jar started out clear with a small amount of sediment in the jar. SWIM couldn't tell what the sediment was, but it was assumed to be stach from the potato water that was put in it. After a few days, SWIM noticed an increase in the sediment in the jar. They look like small white fibers almost. But as the sediment increased, the jar became a little cloudier. Since becoming cloudy, the cloudiness hasn't increased or decreased. Another thing that has been noticed is that there is a long fibrous strand in the jar and when the jar is agitated the strand dances around the center of the jar and you can see that if it were stretched out flat it would be like 6 inches long. The strand is stuck to the bottom and it refuses to come off. The strand was not there the first day and it has grown, but it is unclear if that is mycelium growth or not. It has been a week and a half (2 weeks wednesday) since the lc was made, kept in 72-74 F room (dont own any incubators or anything).
The other two lc's were spore syringes from spores101 (shout out to them by the way, bought one syringe and got one for free!) and were made about 2 days ago. They were made with honey/water (no potato water) and the jars were boil sterilized before the honey/water was in it and after as well. There is no sign of caramelization and SWIM would be more worried about having too little honey in there rather than having too much. The jars have been kept in the dark, at about 75-80 F (its in the laundry room so when the dryer is on its a lot warmer in there). Unlike the creepers jar, these two jars do not have a gas exchange. SWIM is getting polyfill later today to get some gas exchange in there though. SWIM has not gotten a chance to look at them since late last night, but as of 36 to 40 hours into it, it looked completely the same as when the lc's were made.
This is SWIM's first time doing a lc, so the two methods were for experiments sake to see which method is better for future reference.
The question(s) SWIM has for the first lc is that is the growth in the creepers lc normal? If so, when do you recommend it gets inoculated?
For the other two lc's, when should SWIM expect to see signs of growth? What should the growth look like? And lastly, how long should the jars sit until they get innoc'd?
Side note - the jars all have self healing rtv silicone injection points. For anyone who is not using rtv silicone, look into it. It sells for like 5 bucks at Advanced Auto parts and its super easy to apply to the jars. Its a great way to keep contams out and it'll probably save you money in the long run.
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help!
