First Grow Op (Opinions! Pictures!)

Hey, this is SWIM's first mushroom cultivation since I've been back home. I'll be putting pictures of how they are doing, either weekly or daily; it depends on how fast the mycellium will grow for me.
SET UP: Really, just for the incubation stage. The temperature in my home is 76 degrees Fahrenheit, enough for the mushrooms to grow on their own.
Here's the new set-up as suggested by thread: Beginning of Life:These are just a few pictures of the first day of mycellium growth. Near full colonization. PINNING: BIRTHING/FRUITING SET UP:I have them in plastic containers with loose plastic bags over them, and inside are the cakes, which are (now) resting on top of aluminum circles on top of moist perlite. Here are cakes one and two. Three is a little early. ++UPDATED Also, should I just tear this fucking thing off and dry it or keep it on? Just click for a larger picture if needed. OPINIONS, I DON'T MIND I WILL NOW BE POSTING UPDATES ON SEPERATE POSTS. SO ALWAYS CHECK THE LAST PAGES TO SEE GROWTH.

Take the foil off your jars, it's restricting gas exchange. Also ditch the incubator if the room temp is between 70 and 80. Colonizing mycelium benefits from ambient light, it helps establish a circadian rhythm.

I have two sheets of foil on them. Do I remove both? PFTek told me to keep them on as a tight lid! But I could put them in indirect sunlight, it's most likely be better. Thanks.

Any time I'm always here to help
As the mycelium colonizes, it needs to push out CO2, tight foil prevents that and will suffocate your jars.
There have been quite a few advances in cultivation teks since the original PF Tek was written (it has been modified since it's original version). If you check out the "Everything A New Cultivator Needs To Know!" link in my signature, I try to keep the most relevant and up to date teks available.

Perhaps I should leave on a foil lid with holes?

The things you circled in the pictures appears to be very not white. It looks to my semi-trained eye to be a contaminate. I have a jar that has something VERY similar looking next to some super white/healthy myc. Second opinions anyone?

I've kept foil on a couple times. But I had a gnat problem in my grow room. But Idealy no foil is best. Your layer of dry verm keeps it safe.

Too early to tell for sure. I've had myc like that at first, when it colonizes and thickens more can judge it better. I think he's okay. Edit: Took a second look Thadeous, it was a little off color. Post pics 2morrow OP.

As long as you have the actual jar lid with 4 holes on there, you don't want the foil on once the jars have come out of the steam bath/pressure cooker. Another downside to leaving the foil on is that water can condense on the underside as the jars cool, get your dry verm layer wet, and create an opening for contaminates. Always ditch the foil after sterilization

I'm sorry but that doesn't answer my question well. It seems I have three options: Leave both lids on, take one off and put holes, or take them both off. I need to know which is best to do?

Ok if you have the canning lid on with the inoculation holes in it take off all foil. If the foil is your only lid remove the first layer and poke a couple small holes or leave it a lil loose.

"What I call self-transforming machine elves.Sort of like jewelled basketballs all dribbling their way toward me. And if they'd had faces they would have been grinning, but they didn't have faces. And they assured me that they loved me and they told me not to be amazed; not to give way to astonishment. And so I watched them, even though I wondered if maybe I hadn't really done it this time, and what they were doing was they were making objects come into existence by singing them into existence."-Terence McKenna
