WJ's Print Tek * 6
    #16815139 - 09/09/12 02:54 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I present my “Print Tek”

Materials needed:
Heavy Duty Foil – Spend the extra dollar for the good stuff.
Scissors
Tooth Picks or metal Pins
Paper Cutter – I use this one
A ruler/tape measure
Appropriate and mature mushroom caps
Metal baking pans (disposable) – Get the biggest ones you can find.
Latex or Nitrile gloves
Alcohol or Lysol
Propane torch or Alcohol Lamp
A fairly clean room with still air (Laundry room/Bathroom)

The secret to success is in the preparation. Everything should be in order prior to beginning. That means that you will need to think and plan ahead a bit in order to get your timing right. Most mushroom caps will drop the majority of their spores inside about a 24 hr period. This means that we need to have all of our printing supplies prepped and ready the day before.

Step #1 – Preparing your Foil
Most paper cutters have measuring marks on them. If yours don’t then you will need to measure each cut individually. What we are shooting for here is pre-cut foil rectangles that measure 4”x8”. Later on we will print on half of the foil and then fold it over for a print that measures just under 4”x4”. Most rolls of foil come in widths of 12”. That means the most efficient way to cut is to cut it in 8” strips, then turn it sideways and make 3 more cuts every 4”. Why 4”x4” you ask? Because that is the size of a print that you would receive from the average vendor, and that is what we are trying to replicate here. I usually put on a movie and perform this work on the coffee table while I watch. While you are at it, just cut up the whole roll. Save the last couple of feet on the roll. I wear gloves in this process so that I don’t leave my grubby fingerprints all over the foil.

You should now have a pile of 4”x8” foil strips. Stack them neatly with the dull side up. Now take the remaining foil off of the roll, and use it to wrap up your stack of rectangles. Make sure that its protected all the way around and somewhat sealed. Later on we will print on the shiny side, but we want the dull side up so that any contaminants that are present when we later open it, will land on the non spore printing side.

Step #2 – Sterilizing your supplies
Take your baking trays, and your foil packet. Keep the trays stacked, and toss the foil inside the top tray. Now put them inside the oven and set the temperature to 350 degrees. Depending on how many trays you have, you may need to remove one of the oven racks in order to get everything to fit. Bake for about 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes leave the door closed, and all of your supplies inside until you are ready to use them, and they are cool. I usually do mine the day before. 350 degrees for 30 minutes is plenty of time to kill anything that may be present on any of the metal.

Step #3 – Selecting your cap
This is a little bit art, and a little bit science. There’s a fairly narrow window from the beginning to the end of spore ejection. And the better you know your own mushrooms, the better you will get with the timing. Basically what we are looking for, is the cap on the fruit body to go flat. Sometimes its even better to wait until they actually go convex.

When you see this you should have everything sterilized and ready to go. Next thing we are waiting for is to see some kind of visual cue that tells us spores are being released. These cues can be spores on the stems, caps, caps of underlying fruit bodies, etc….Basically we want to see spores somewhere other than the gills and the veils.

Step #4 – Preparing your printing environment
Go to your “Still Air Room” and give it a good once over with a cleaning rag, and spray the air with a fine mist of water. While you’re there leave the following items out and ready to use: Scissors, toothpicks, Alcohol/ Lysol, Torch/lamp. When you leave the room, close the door slowly so as to disturb the air as little as possible. Take your mushroom substrate with the fruit bodies on it and put it in the room. Put on some gloves, and sanitize them with some alcohol or Lysol. Pull out your supplies from the oven and proceed to your printing area.

Step #5 – Laying out the foil
Re-sanitize your gloves before proceeding. We want to take advantage of the maximum amount of area we have in the bottom of our printing trays. When I lay down the foil, I use a checker pattern to best utilize the space. We want the shiny side up now. The foil showing is already in 4”x4” squares. This is convenient since that’s the area that we want to print on. Once the foil is arranged and ready to go, take a second baking pan, flip it over and set it on top to serve as a lid. If you have the trays with the plastic covers, be sure to wipe these down with alcohol prior to using them. Be sure to let the alcohol evaporate off before sealing the tray or your caps will turn bluish black and go funky on you.

Step #6 – Printing your cap
Make sure that your gloves are dry, and free of anything flammable. Light your torch/lamp. Open your scissors, and run the blades through the flame. It doesn’t need to get red hot; we’re just looking to sanitize them from anything that may already be on the blades. Briefly do the same to your toothpick or pin. I like toothpicks because they don’t get hot while I’m holding them. The toothpick should be a bit charred, but not burned through.
Select which cap you will be printing. Make sure that your scissors have cooled enough that it won’t burn the fruit. Put your scissors on the underside of the cap, and hold the fruit body steady as you insert the toothpick into the top of the cap. Once the toothpick is in, use the scissors to snip the cap from the stipe. Don’t set the scissors down! They can pick up contaminants from the surface you set them on.
Move the freshly harvested cap to your printing tray, and place it gill side down. We are looking to cover as much as that 4”x4” area as we can. One large print is the best, but several smaller caps are perfectly acceptable. You want a good amount of spores on the print for whoever receives these. Be fair and fit what you can in the given area.
Once all of the caps have been placed, put another tray on top for a lid. I usually wait 18-24 hrs, and then remove the lid and check to see how dark the prints are. If you have good strong spore producing genetics, you can sometimes print the caps twice. My experience though is that the second printing will need about 36 hrs to get dark enough to be respectable.

Step #7 – Drying your prints
Once all of your caps have dropped their spores, it’s time to dry your prints. Put on your gloves again, and sanitize. Remove all of your caps from the foil, and place them in a separate container. Place the lid back on your tray, and set it aside for about a day maybe two if you are in a humid environment. During this step we are allowing the moisture to evaporate out of the spores and off of the foil. If this step is skipped then you may end up with spores germinating inside the print, or such nastiness as bacteria.  Don’t get in a hurry; just let them do their thing.

Step #8 – Folding and storing
After completion of the drying period, it’s time to fold your prints for storage. Put the gloves back on and sanitize. Pick up each piece of foil and fold it in half. The fold itself produces the seal on one side. Now fold over the adjacent sides by about 1/8” and crease the foil. Do the same on the side opposite the fold.

While sealing up your prints take note of which ones have thick dark deposits, and which ones were lighter. Keep these prints in separate piles as you are sealing them. The darker prints are the best representation of your work, and as such should have more value to you.

Here are some examples of acceptable prints.

This one is a bit borderline. Ideally it would have had more than that one cap.

The lighter prints are best used for giveaways.  Regardless, I always pay my tithing to the Shroom Gods, by giving away at least 5 prints from each grow.  Pick a couple of new kids, or donate them to the FSRE, any way you do it, just stay on the good side of Karma.

Now here’s the big part. LABEL YOUR DAMN PRINTS! It should look something like this:
Species
Strain
Date print was taken

Happy Printing folks. Be safe out there.

That link has already helped quite a few people, and will help a lot more in the future.  And unilke some people, I'm not charging for information that can be found for free   And while I do suggest it a lot to people I think will benefit from it, I also answer questions directly as well, so I'm sure the link only answer rate is quite a bit lower than 70%

Of course your not charging for it. All of it is already on the shroomery,
how could you charge people for things others created.

People are still selling videos and books with information that can all be found on the Shroomery and other web resources, and it seems to work for them pretty well.  I just think free information should stay that way.

I think that those products have set the stage for many successful grows. Especially first time grows. Had it not been for RR's videos, I never would have found the Shroomery. Never would have grown my own cubes, and never would have taken that first trip.

Those products have their place. And besides, nobody is being forced to buy them.

I don't intend to imply that those products don't have their place.  I even advertise them where appropriate.  I meant to say that I could have put a price tag on the guide, but that would have defeated my purpose in putting the guide together in the first place.

They eat just fine after printing.

Understand that there are no active substances in the spores. Which is why they are legal to posses and sell here in the US.

I was planning on taking the spores, putting them in syringes with sterile water. Then holding on to them as cold storage. Then saving multiple at a time for later.

I'm guessing that putting them into containment and having the spore prints placed in water containment then taking the water and putting it into syringe. Would this be a good way to create spore syringes?

Is all foil sterilized or should it be pced before you transfer the caps to them?

As per the Tek

Quote:

Step #2 – Sterilizing your supplies Take your baking trays, and your foil packet.
