another thread about inactive cakes!
    #16818237 - 09/09/12 04:18 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

okay so my question is this, theres a birthed cake inside a FC that hasn't grown much if at all since birth(maybe slight pinning.) should it be re-dunked to re hydrate it in an attempt to get growth going again?

You asked a question with minimal information.

How long ago was the cake birthed, was it allowed to consolidate for at
least a week. What FC are you using, and what are the conditions.

an sgfc, not a week only 5 days, light 12h/d, misting/fanning four times ever 3 hrs while lights are on. Humidity reads 90%.

That's way to soon to start worrying...
And as long as you dunk/roll upon birthing there
is no need to re-dunk them. Unless you have a fan
running in the room with your FC, which would cause
it to dry out substantially. Do NOT use a fan.

there was a fan running next to the FC for the drying box but this shouldn't be a problem since every other cake has been doing fine, the only thing that was "done wrong" was the roll part of the tek was left out.

Rolling in vermiculite acts as a small casing layer,
and helps keep the cake hydrated.

To know when the cake needs dunked again, gently lift
one and judge the weight of it from the weight it was
when first birthed. Usually when they need re-dunked it
will feel almost as light as Styrofoam (or really light).

Another skill that comes with multiple grows trial/error.

5 days is nothing to worry about. The vermiculite roll does help pinning by improving the microclimate on the surface of the cake so it's possible that not rolling played a role in why it's "maybe not pinning" while the others are already.

yes that was noted when the first cake was harvested the substrate shrank in mass and weight significantly which is expectable
