Habitat: Where does it grow? On the ground on decomposing leaves in mixed woods pines & oaks
Gills: Cream colored, sharp edged, close together
Stem: 3 1/2" L, about 1/2-3/4" in diamter, cream colored matching the gills. Flesh was solid.
Cap: Firm, dry and smooth about 4"-5" diameter. Slight concave depression darker near the center rusty orange brown color. Cap is mostly orange in color.
Spore print color: working on it, not ready yet
Bruising: No color change when cut, but parts of the gills were brown-- maybe due to age?
Other information: No strong smell After cutting, milky white liquid extracted from stem. It did not change color but was kinda sticky.

Candy caps will have a strong, sweet distinct scent and are darker orange than these. These look more like Lactarius volemus.

Could these be babies? They did not smell like much of anything. There were some bigger ones -- more vase shaped. I thought there were false chanterelles. The color was duller more tan/ brown in color. They smelled really awful and had lots of beetles in them. Are those the same Lactarius volemus or a different type? It seems that all the really big mushrooms we have found are full of worms and beetles

These aren't babies. I can't say about the other mushrooms. Bugs gotta eat too...

OK-- I have more info. I dried them in the oven and I do not smell anything fishy or sweet. It just smells like mushrooms.
The spore print was also white. Paper had brown stains too-- from juice.
I did a little more research and now I think it maybe a lactarius corrugis
Is there other ways to check the ID without actually eating it?

Lactarius corrugis has a felty whitish bloom when young and a dark brownish red cap with corrugations. These look like Lactarius volemus to me. The brown stain on the paper is from the "milk".
