Mixed straw in with my woodchips... and they don't seem to have any complaints!

I also like to think that straw works by providing colonization pathways through the sub, as once a straw is colonized colonization along its length is guaranteed.
Many edible, wood-lover, substrates naturally compact down to a fairly dense substrate block (like plain, moist sawdust), and straw can definitely improve performance for many species.
The only caveat is that for some blocks I actually like the denser block. When the species has no problem tearing through it (like Shitake), then the end result is less grungy on the surface and handles spraying very well. Too much straw can leave the block with a top surface sufficiently lumpy so that spraying left it with too much water pooling on the top.
I am also enjoying adding rice hulls to serve a similar purpose. They do a perfect job of conditioning the subs. I am still going into fruiting with many of the slower species that I am trying it with, and so no final word yet.
Take care,
JD

I know from the environments I find ovoids in that they love anything long, thin and hollow, I'm thinking straw would be an excellent addition to their substrate as well.

I have a question for all of you wood lovers. last year i found some actives locally for the 1st time. ive always had to travel to find some. so i took prints and made a spore solution. so back in Jan i started some 1/2 pint agar jars and got some nice growth. i then transferred some agar wedges to some 1/2 pint grain jars, and then to some alder wood chips that can be found at any pet store. the wood chips have been in a mycobag since april and is fully colonized now. im stuck at this point as to what to do next. we just started to get our 1st rains of the season and current temps are 16*C and low of 10*C (~65*F-45*F)RH is at 67%. last week we were 5-10*warmer so it looks like my local season is just getting started. however my local patch hasnt started to fruit. my question is if i try and attempt this tek now, can i expect to see fruits this year, or would it be better to just expand my wood chips and get ready for next year?

You should have put them into the wild (guerilla woodchip mulched beds) during spring/early summer to expect a chance of fruit this year.. im afraid to say you may not see any fruits at all this year unless ur old patch fruits again ..
I'd get a big plastic bin drill some holes for air .. fill with woodchips ... soak them for 24 hours .. drain for a few hours ... place your colonized myc into the centre ... cover over with woodchips ... stick in your shed with the lid loosely on to allow it to breath .. and forget about it till next spring (possibly mist it with water once a month)
p.s. also depends which hemisphere ur in? north im assuming?

thanks for the reply. yea i live in the north. and as far as a tub with holes, how many holes should i have. are we talking like a sgfc or just a handful like a monotub. and how large of a tub would be ideal if i want to give it the best chance of fruiting this year. right now the colony is about the size of an american football and weighs about 1-1.5kg. my original plan was to crumble and spawn to woodpiles/landscaped areas in my locale but then i found this tek and liked the ideal of being able to grow them in pots and since they have been eating wood for 6 months i thought i still might get fruits this year.

well you could always try .. wouldnt hurt ... take the lid off .. water it .. stick it outside in the cold, maybe case it a little with some forest floor humus? or broken down woodchips .. or some garden dirt .. just to give it something new to blast through .. you can always refrigerate it to mimic outside winter air (no lower than 2C)
look at my sig ... my grow log of p cyans .. goto first posts .. and see my biscuit tub i used to get myc going .. and i only put about 15-20 holes in the lid ... if a huge monotub (bigger the better ie fit more substrate) just go nuts with a hot screwdriver (so it doesn't crack) or a drill doesn't have to be too many
but you still have yours in a myco bag not outside already in a pot? something should have been done with it already!
anyway don't take my words as gospel im just throwing ideas in the air theres plenty of other teks about .. but if you ask me .. its too late to go from a myc bag .. to fruits for this fall.. but you could prove me wrong with a cased solid lump! that just may fruit!

So last week i birthed my colonized log to a tub of wood chips/shavings and topped with a mix of verm, coir, and humus. as of yesterday there is a couple of spots of myco poking through the top layer. as far as getting fruits this season we will see what happens. I'll post some pics if/when it fruits. thanx for the help everyone.
