hey folks,
Just wanted to share this with you, and get you excited about some woodlover joy, now it's starting to get cold and dark and shitty!
so lets go back to the start, to the start of 2012.
:BACKGROUND:
Hamloaf was super generously offering Cyanofriscosa prints in January, and after looking them up and not finding an awful lot about them - apart from they were quite newly discovered, they were pretty potent, very pretty, had AWESOME spiral myc on AGAR (Can't find the pic now..) and they'd be fine in my climate - I ventured a yes please, not thinking he'd want to post to the UK. but joy of joys, he sent a couple over!
BIG UPS HAMLOAF!!!
had a look for TEK's and found this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=255&Number=13477434&fpart=1&PHPSESSID= and asked a few knowledgeable dudes what they thought would be the best way to go and this is what I did
:TEK:
Spore Syringe - standard method
boiling water sucked into syringe 7 or 8 times and squirted out into the sink last draw was left to cool for 3 or so hours until room temperature
in my basic Still Air Box, a bleached/ boiling water cleaned shot glass was left covered for an hour, with water sprayed inside box to catch the airborne contams
after a shower and wearing a face mask, I scraped 1/2 the print (1cm across) into the glass, flamed the needle, squirted the water over it, swilled it around and sucked it back up. re flamed the needle and left to sit for 24 hours
at the same time I had soaked WBS (poundland shite, not very good I don't think, washed and removed the floaters) 12 hours with a pinch of gypsum, boiled for about 10 mins, then drained in a colander, flipped a few times until dry enough to slip off a spoon without leaving moisture, chucked into jars with SFD/ silicon lids (like this TEK from Transcendinglife Transcending Life's Lid TEK - cheers mate!!)
PC'd for about 2 hours with foil over the lids(as my PC only goes up to 12psi), waited an hour, shook the jars to distribute the moisture, removed foil then left to cool overnight
Innoced in my SAB box, about 1cc fr a 1/2 pint jar to 2cc for the 1/2 quart jar. flamed the needle before and after injection, gave a small squeeze on the syringe plunger so that a jet of steam exited the needle, which I directed over the silicon injection port (thinking it might further sterilize over the anti-bacterial hand gel I'd swabbed it with) gave the jars a quick shake, then popped up on my shelf in indirect light, winter temps. so low 60's to mid 70's I guess
then after about 8 or 9 days, LIFE!!!!

a tiny glimmer, but it was something. didn't know if it was friscosa or trych, so I kept an eye on it
a week later and it was spreading slow and steady, and deffo wasn't trich
so at 30% coverage, they got a good shake
a month later

it wasn't as thick as cubes, and seemed to go real slow - whether this was the temps, the quality of the grain, my sterilisation technique, or just the species, I'm not sure. I was getting lots of metabolites
so figured it was a bit contaminated, but just kept an eye on it as it didn't seem like trich/ cobweb/ lipstick/ black mould or bacteria were showing their ugly faces
so after advice, I decided to spawn the grains which were completely covered now and given an extra week or so just in case.
I had found some rhododendron chippings

and thought they'd be ace as cyans are well known for growing under them, seemed like a good mix, and was all I could get my hands on, without having a car or a hundred weight of chippings dropped off.
I tried to remove as much green as possible, added some aspen pet bedding, and random hardwood chippings bought from a petshop. (that's a 2pence piece for size comparison) all the bits were about 1/2" at the largest, and were boiled for a couple of hours, chucked in a bucket and left outside.

at the same time I soaked cardboard egg boxes in tap water for an hour, loaded each bit up with a few grains (after shaking the jars and banging on bike tyre) and a few bits of the wood mix. the smell was super powerful mushroom, almost meaty... hard to describe. but no earthy smells, or apply smells, so I figured al was well
these were then placed in clear plastic bags, left open and fanned/ misted every day. on top of a shelf. indirect sun.

these buggers were hungry! and quickly started spreading. the myc was amazing!!!

and in three weeks had got to this stage

i lost maybe 3 to trych out of about 24, and just put them outside to do their thing
at this stage the woodchips were drained and whacked into a plant pot which I'd melted holes in the side

as I'd heard that Fresh Air was good, and had seen a TEK where someone had loaded up a laundry basket with woodcips and done it that way. I ripped up the egg boxes and laid it down in amongst the woodchips and left outside covered from direct sunlight. and waited. a 2nd batch of egg boxes were ready 2 weeks later (from a slower colonising grain jar) and so more chips had been prepared (not boiled this time, just left in rain water for 3-4 weeks) ripped up and placed inside

the myc was still very hungry

and was watered every now and again to keep damp. rain water if poss, if not, tap water
then in July, I topped of the mix with some Oak twigs/ chunks I'd found, and a mix of forest humus and coir about an inch
pots now looking like this:

(minus the greenery, which has grown over the time)
then after a cold snap a few days ago, VOILA!!
 which grew to
 in a couple of days
then got chomped by a fucking SLUG!!!

he's on the far right. but plenty of little brothers and sisters are coming out to play with him, so hopefuly a full ring of salt around the base of the pot will keep the moluscs at bay..

so once again a massive thanks to everyone on here for their expertease, support, wisdom and love
massive big up's to Hamloaf again for sending the prints, if I could plus 10 the guy I would
you Rock sir!
Any questions, feel free to post, and I will try and print these if I get any full fruits out of them
cheers
Keeno

-------
here's a rough collage of the pins as they were on the 12th sept

there's an over lap of 5 pins (taken from 2 angles) otherwise, they're all individuals the one hiding away bottom left I call Jim
------ and here's a couple of nice clusters 5 days later on the 17th sept

salt had been placed around the base of the pots (which had been raised off the floor to improve drainage) a couple of small slugs were spotted at night, but I think they were all ready hiding in the pot, so they didn't do much damage ------ 20th sept they grow quite slow compared to Cubes, and the temps here have been around 20°C max and down to about 6°C. quite a lot of rain too and periodic misting when it's been dry

these get the sun on them (if it's out) from about 7 till 11, but they're covered with a packing crate thing, so 30% holes, the rest solid.
Another pot I have which is covered by plants and gets more sun hasn't pinned at this stage at all.
 this one's well healthy ---- 23rd sept

quite night shot after a shit ton of rain. they didn't seem to mind
----- 25th Sept

lovely warm sun today, and they look like they're ready to go

----- 26th sept

I so don't wanna pick these, they just look so perfect
but in the interests of mycology, I'll snip a few and start to get prints.
---- 27th sept well I had to do it

went to this

with 12 caps currently being printed (between 1" and 2" diameter)
and this harvested (about 130g)

Amazing gills on them too!!!!

and a smell that was slightly sweeter than the cubes but the same terrible taste
------ 28th Sept
got to see my first print today!

looks a bit light brown, compared to cubes, but waiting to hear what the experts say
------------ BLUE!!!!!!

--------------- 30th Sept some mutants to share with you folks
this one is two

this cheeky one doesn't mind opening it's flaps for you

this mad one is lying down and won't get up!!

and lastly a pic of the spores. I was a little late harvesting, and they've laid down the goods all over this little ones heed

doing prints as we speak.
----- [8th October ]
so with a few prints done and a beautiful harvest, I thought you might be interested in seeing that the stumps have started growing myc on them
sorry for the bad picture quality, I'll try and get a better one
In other news, the third pot has thrown up about 30 nice pins, so I'll try and get shots of them tomorrow!
gotta love Nature!

and a lovely cluster in pot 2 (printing now)

---------
10th Oct
here's a shot of pot c which has now come into it's own.

this pot was in a different part of the garden with more light during the day and less coverage, so perhaps the extended light hours delayed this from pinning?
who knows, but it looks beautiful!
as do these post spore printing caps. the blue is just mind blowing!!

------------- 11th oct
have got about 30 prints, taken as quickly as as cleanly as I could, so these should be available for you folks soon

and the butts from a couple of the caps I'd used to print had what looked like myc growing out of them. I presume it's not mould of any kind?

hungry little virile beasts
[updated 11th October]
***Sept 2013 update***
hey folks, just thought I'd share a "one year on" kind of update with you.
one of the pots was left covered in the garden all year round, next to the house (so less frost damage possibly) and in May, I tipped the pot upside down, and the substrate all came out in one huge mass of semi chomped wood any bright white myc. So I just let it be, with the occasional water, and that was it. Now the batch from last year definitely dropped spores, so I wouldn't like to say whether the new batch of mushrooms is last years fruiting again, or a new set of genetics...
but here are the results:
I had a look a week ago and saw this:

and today, they've grown more

so nowhere near as virile as last year, but them Alenii are tough little suckers. I need to go check my outdoor patches next

2015 update -
12th Feb 2015
So just wanted to try and give these beauties life again this year. So I got back on the site, read the TEK, loads of others, heard the sad news about Roger Rabbit, got sad, had a cry, thought of loved ones, had a hug, got on with it, got a bit happier again.
After I'd found all my old jars, and lids, I gave them a proper wash, using bleach and boiling water. letting the mixture sit in the jars for 10 mins up to the rim, pouring out and washing the jars which were then placed upside down on fresh kitchen roll. after that I grabbed my 3 syringes (one had a little liquid left so I squeezed that onto an old dying tree stump in the back garden) and got a pan of water boiling fast. each syringe had boiling water sucked in, swilled about and pushed out 7 or 8 times. on the final fill, I flamed the end of the needle, pushed the plunger until a few jets of steam came out, which I directed into the needle cover, then replaced the cover and left the syringes to cool for 3 hours or so. Next I created the spore prints as follows: got a small box on it's side, which I cleaned out with lysol, then washed out 3 shot glasses with bleach/ boiling water as with the jars. squirted down the walls of the box with water, put in the shot glasses, covered with fresh tin foil and left for 30 mins with cover over the SAB. Had a shower and made sure to clean my teeth well. I have no idea if bad breath can disseminate bacteria, but no point chancing it eh? then I found 2 spores prints. One was from my 2013 harvest:

another was a Cyan print which I had won in a competition run by Mandrax360 (thanks again!)
so with a face mask on and my arms liberally covered in anti-bacterial rub, I set about creating the syringes. The Cyan print was on paper and with a freshly flamed and cooled scalpel blade (cooled with a drop of water from the syringe) I scraped it off into the shot glass, filled with the water from the syringe, swilled about and sucked it back up, flaming the needle before and after. did the same with the Alenii prints, with one having more of a scraping than the other as it was 20cc, not 10cc like the other two. and area about the size of my little fingernail was used for the larger one, about 2/3 for smaller ones.
once in and flamed, they were set aside in cool dark cupboard for about 36 hours whilst I prepped the jars
Using RR's rye grain TEK ( http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6936247#6936247 )
I washed the grains about 5 or 6 times, really working them around. The rye I had was very out of date (about 9 months after sell by date) but it looked ok, perhaps a little dusty... I thought I'd risk it. overcooked them a bit I think, gave them 10 mins on a good boil, a few bursters (10 or 15 individual grains perhaps viewable from the outside of the jars) I reckon that'd be fine... we'll see. I let it all dry for about 10 mins, flipping and stirring them up until they slid off a spoon without leaving much water behind (it was slightly damp, but not much) before filling the jars I used my butane flame (the type used for cooking, very good, 3" blue flame) to flame the inside of the jars, just to remove last of moisture and zap anything left in there... dunno if it helped but made me feel better filled the jars about 3/4 full, replaced the lids, and then pressure cooked them for 2hours 20 mins roughly. (my pressure cooked is 12.5psi, so I give it longer) once out, I let them sit and cool for 24 hours, then inoculated them in the SAB (after a shower and wearing a face mask, hands cleaned with anti-bac). Each jar got 1cc if standard jam jar sized, and 2-3cc in the bigger ones. I flamed the needle each time and wiped the innoc point on the lid with anti-back hand wash then directed the steam jet from the syringe onto it as well. I have no idea if the tiny steam jet helps clean it at all, but it seems a waste to not use the little jet. perhaps the silicon can handle the hot needle and that would be better way to kill any bacteria/ spores... feel free to chime in with your opinion
nocc'd them up Monday 2nd Feb, here's the pile of jars

today, Thurs 12th, I looked and they're going grand!

lots of action, can't guarantee this isn't all trich, but it's life
I had one jar that just wouldn't fit into the pressure cooker. so I thought I'd leave that as a tester... wow.

it's fucking rampant in there!
Wish I'd inoculated it with some Alenii to see how they fight against this onslaught... I'm not too worried about this jar, it's well sealed, and the grows are all outdoors and they seem to be more hardy towards contams...
anyways, excited to be back in the mycology world, and really would like to explore the relationship between plants and trees and how beneficial they are to each other. Would Alenii mycelium in perhaps a pot with an Acer in it, improve the health of the tree with increased nutrient exchange, increased water retention etc? I love the idea of a show of Autumn colours and beautiful little fungi growing out of the pot I'll give it a go with other flowers, roses, dahlias etc to see if they like living together as well
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
27th Feb update
the jars are all coming along now, and so I'm just giving them a little while longer to consolidate (not sure if that's necessary), then I'm going to whack them onto the cardboard
the little jar looks like this now:

so I gave it a shake to see how it was in the middle, and it's white all the way through. so I'll give it a couple of days to recover, then whack it out into some eggbox heaven it's amazing how the myc is so wispy, but there are a couple of denser patches that are really solid white. I've picked up some woodchips that have been leached a few days and I'll sprinkle a bit of that in with the eggboxes. exciting times!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
4th March update
few developments along the way:
I've birthed the small jar as it looked ready to go and I got a but excited with another project (I'll link to it here once I've done the writeup)

egg carton sprayed with bleach spray (then immediately washed off when I thought "It's gonna kill the myc you idiot!") and then soaked in tap water for an hour
loaded up with the grains and some woodchips (unknown wood, taken from allotment) and placed into a plastic bag left open
I could have got two cartons going, but didn't have one handy, so just thought I'd load it up

have another big chunk of cardboard packaging (as mentioned/ shown in the above post) that is now soaking and will be filled up with this:

one of the jars that looks ready to go. I have a bit of a time constraint as I'm going to be away for a bit, so trying to rush it a bit, which I know is wrong, but we'll see how it goes
cheers folks!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
15th March 2015 update
bit of myc porn for you
 hungry little things

they love an egg box

closeup of above ^^
*Proud father*

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
24th March update
few more pics before I pop them out into their wood baskets outside

spot of cobweb mould there, hopefully that won't do too much damage

some Trych has got in. same as above. it's outnumbered, so hopefully the myc will over take it

sea of filth
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
24th April update
few developments along the way:
I've birthed the small jar as it looked ready to go and I got a but excited with another project (I'll link to it here once I've done the writeup)

egg carton sprayed with bleach spray (then immediately washed off when I thought "It's gonna kill the myc you idiot!") and then soaked in tap water for an hour

cheers folks! latest update
so my last jar was well ready

to be honest, it looked like bacteria had gotten to it, so I was a bit worried... but I broke it up, opened it and it smelt purely of mushroom, no fermented smell or apples or anything, so fingers crossed
soaked egg trays for 20 mins loaded them up (8 trays from about 3/4 pint of spawn
for some I added some woodchip that had been boiled for an hour and left to soak (all pretty random, I wanted to do it fast and get them into the greenhouse)
I had a moment of concern when I thought I saw blue/ green... but it turned out to be bruising!! amazing that even at this stage they can turn blue.
then lashed them into a greenhouse with a tarp over it to keep out the direct sunlight I've put a sheet of greaseproof paper over each try to try and keep the humidity high around the grains and I'll monitor how damp the cardboard stays.
I am a bit worried about high temps. yesterday was sunny and even though this greenhouse is fully shaded most of the day, it does get some direct sunlight. the temperature never went above 78, so hoping it will be ok, otherwise I'll add more screening from the sunlight
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
20th May update
so the temps in the greenhouse have been ok, and I've been misting and giving the bags a good fan, to keep them moist
seems to have worked

so pretty, chewing away there

I would have liked to have given them a week or so more, but time's against me

the bottoms of the tray were fuzzy as you like!

loaded these into the bread tray (Cheers Tesco's )

tore the trays a little so the water can flow through it without pooling too badly

added a bit of compost for moisture retention

chucked in some big lumps of dead tree root to chomp on.

then topped off and watered

checked some of the other tubs and they're happy as Larry

my remaining jars were ready to go so they got placed into the cardboard trays, triple decked and loaded into the greenhouse all sealed in bags to keep moist.

this myc was trying to run for it!

nice leaf
so now I pretty much just have to water them and top up with new woodchips if they need it
then the next lot of cardboard will be ready, which I plan to plant out around town in their woodchip beds
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
1st July update
so today the myc finally gets put into it's summer homes
I've been watering the trays once a week, but looking through them ~I think it't too much, they were really wet inside, I just need to mist once a fortnight really lightly
dug open one of the pallets:

plenty of myc but a bit soggy

my myc guardian is doing a grand job :jachiechanofapproval:

some nice myc spreading over a 2"x4"

the latest egg trays with the Allenii muching awy happily I like the way they've managed to leach the blue colour from the carboard, I wonder if they'll stain extra blue? haha

at the bottom of the trays was some sort of jelly... didn't explore too closely, I presume it was some kind of metabolites...?

oi ya cheeky little sod! Get outta there!

interesting shot

one of the old pallets turned into a new one just before I squished it down. It was pretty wet, so I'll have to remember to water less

nice shot
so no new info really... other than watering hard once a week with a hose it
TOO MUCH

bring on the autumn

Hey Keeno what up dude. Japan does kickass I went to Osaka and down south visiting a college mate living there. Fuckin awesome place, great ppl.
This was an experiment using LC and pouring the colonized content over cardboard lined container with Scotts earthgrow brown mulch from Home Depot. I poured and let sit for 24hrs then drained. I am now making more to pour over existing mulch beds all over.

Awesome job, Keeno!
This is a great TEK, and it has everything someone would need to do the job.
Congrats on the pins, too.

Very well then. As far as cloning goes yeah, you should definitely try it. Just get some tissue samples onto agar until a strong culture runs and clean it up.

Nah. For prepping agar all you need the ingredients, BRF jars with grain lid construction, or petri dishes, an empty Crown Royal bottle, some tyvek and a pressure cooker.
To remain sterile while working with agar a flowhood is the best but it's not a deal breaker to clone if you don't have one. You can obtain a very sterile environment to work with agar out of if you don't have a flowhood with a homemade still-air-box though.
