Should I be harvesting some of these, and if so how? *PICS*
    #16813642 - 09/08/12 09:02 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Before you link me to multiple harvesting threads, I just spent almost 2 hours reading dozens of them, and I did gain alot of useful knowledge. What im thinking is that I harvest by only cutting the mushrooms that are ready, as down low on the base as I can with a razor blade or scissors. That will leave the base, and allow the smaller mushies to continue to grow and hit their peak. Am i correct here?

And when they're all done growing I then pull all the bases off completely and then what? Do i then dunk each tray in water for a few hours, sprinkle some loose verm/peat over it, and repeat the process till no more mushies come up or contams take over? Ive heard some people say that their substrate and casings were still semi moist and didnt need a full dunking, and instead got by with a good solid misting to rehydrate everything.

I have included some photos. I dont have 9 trays, I have like 4, I just took two pics of each, one still inside the terrarium, and one while i was holding it with my thumb sticking out so you can see how big they are. One thing is strange though, my three strains are Texas, Mexican, and Brazil. And the Texas one said they would be small fruits, but potent, so i expected them to be small, which they are, but the Mexican and Brazil said large fruits, which I didnt get. I gave plenty of light, and fresh air. I did have a problem getting my humidity over 80%, but I have some ideas to fix that and dial it in, so I dont need help there, yet.
Does anyone else have XP with Mex and Brazil, and did they get similar size fruits?
Also, I had 3 large tin foil type lasagna pans, one of each strain, and one was taken over by green mold just under the white mycelium layer, so I moved it outside for now, as its still fruiting (early stages), and I think I might be able to salvage a small supply before tossing out completely. The second lasagna pan just today got a small quarter size thing of green mold, but I scooped it out with a spoon and I think I got it all, or enough of it to allow the mushies to fruit for at least one decent flush. The third and final pan seems good so far with no contams.
This is my very first grow ever, so im learning, and finding out by trial and error what to do and what not to do for my next run, which will be a basic 3 smaller monotub, Daimon coir Tek trial, and my only concern is contam on the casing. If i can manage to keep that under control somehow, I think it will go good.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me, especially on my harvesting, which I would like to do tonight and at least get some into the drying phase.

I just rip em out of the sub with my hand then cut the dirty end off. you can do whatever method you choose though.

There are a couple big guys I would pull now but the pinset is a little uneven and some could grow a bit more, but it all really depends on preference. I like to pick when the veil first shows splitting.

Looking good man!

I grab the base and twist them loose. Then scrape the dirt off the base.  I also like to pick right before the veil tears.  I would defiantly recommend that you pick before they release spores.

I cut with a razor so the substrate doesn't get torn up

If you want spore prints, wait till the caps fully open, if you just want to eat them, harvest just before the veil breaks.

this is such a huge debate on this forum.  i like twist and pull,  but it takes practice and technique.

alot of people will tell you to cut.

so it boils down to preference

Firstly, great job on your 1st grow. :super: Nicely done!

With regard to harvest... :whathesaid:. It's a personal choice. This difficulty is best avoided with an even pinset, which is the goal for all of us, I think.

When I used to get uneven sets, I'd harvest the older ones and NOT the little ones only if I didnt have more spawn waiting for a tub within a week. I write a week because after a dunk I'd usually see my next flush ready for harvest within 7-10 days. If spawn is ready, I'd stop at 2 flushes, and if not, then go for a third.

On dunking, it's about getting water back into the substrate without any excess pooling on top or in the tray. However you want to go about doing that is up to you. Some people just pour water over, some submerge, etc...

On the size thing... this can be attributed to genetics in an MS project, regardless of the variety of cube. Use the substrate recipe again with another MS of the same variety or a different variety, and you may get "regular" sized fruits.
However, our moisture is more likely the culprit given the whole 90% thing.  The reason most people use larger trays or monotubs with 2-4" substrates is because they hold more moisture. If you keep using the same trays, try upping the moisture in your recipe by 5-15%.

hope this helps

Thank you, that did help, along with the previous replies from the other posters. I am in full agreement that other then the normal contam issues that we all face in all our grows, my problem here is humidity level and moisture in the substrate. I'll dial it in eventually, and find ways to tweak this and that. It could also be like you said, the genetics of that specific strain, or version of that strain is a better way to say it. Also, I read your write up on pinning the other day, voted it up, and gave you a 5 rating. Very nice, and i got alot of useful info in it, and bookmarked it. What I dont understand in it though is the fuzzy feet issue. Ive been fanning my tub twice a day at least, every day, AND its a shotgun tub on top of that. However i never put any holes in the bottom and raised it off the table I keep it on. So maybe that has something to do with it, not getting air from underneath that comes up and through the perlite.
Im definitely going to take your tips and info, and other stuff ive read on the forums, and hopefully my next run, using my first monotub and the bucket coir tek, will give me a more even pinset and larger fruits. I know others have said I dont need one, but I really would like to get a self misting unit, run it into a t-fitting, and have it set to mist two separate tubs, and come on automatically. Ive found a few good models, im going to read some reviews and buy one to start with a pump, and see how it does. I know alot of people dont like them, including RR, but in my case with my issues with too much water, not enough, humidity issues, I think it will help me dial things in. Thanks again for the help guys, tomorrow morning i'm gonna do some picking!
PS- I did see the response about dunking, but what do i do after I rehydrate the substrate? Do I then put a light layer of casing back over what I have, or just leave it as it is and the mushies will start all over again? And I am only going to do 2 flushes, this was just a trial experiment run, and i have 30 jars waiting to use next week when my coir comes in the mail. Im actually starting to run out of room, tubs, and more importantly, lighting. So at this time I cant really be doing a half a dozen flushes x's 6 bins, lol. :frown:

:congrats:Nice first grow man

edit- Brazil was my sole strain from years. Mine grew quickly, aggressivly, fruited easily, produced giant shrooms, and were all shitty body high with crappy visuals. Gave me alot of shrooms tho

This is why people say to follow RR's tek "to the T." I've never used SGFC's, so for you shotgun pros out there, correct me if I'm wrong.

The holes on the bottom of the SGFC are arguably the most important ones of all the six sides. Also, check the spacing on your holes. I don't have anything for scale from your images, but they look a little far apart.

After it's elevated, the airflow through the bottom ups the humidity in the chamber, and you just have to keep the perlite moist. After you have pins, it's better to get more FAE in there and not worry so much about humidity. This is why you have fuzzy feat... lack of FAE. You can manually fan more or put a fan on in the room opposite your chamber, NOT directly facing it. However, never let the perlite run out of water.

On dunking, you just put it back into fruiting conditions. You never need to case cubes, but some people like to use that layer.

Two flushes is usually safest anyway. The contams for us beginner growers usually start taking over by the third.

On your space issues, get a rotation going. I did the same thing when I started growing and had way too much spawn waiting for space to open up.

Regarding the 50/50 after your coir arrives, read this. It's is a common occurrence for some reason beyond my understanding. It's obviously not the tek's fault as plenty of people have great success with it, but it's what made me never skip my gypsum (which Damion recommends anyway), coffee grounds, and manure. The attraction to it, I think, is the lack of "proper pasteurization," and the fear of manure stinking up the house, which is ill-placed.

Again, fantastic job for your 1st grow. My first few attempts were absolutely shit compared to what you've got going.

Any questions while you prepare for your monotub?

:peace:

Thank you for that info, I agree with everything you said. I read on RR website about how air comes up from the bottom, and you are correct, the bottom holes are the most important, which I didnt put in. For some reason i thought all the perlite would pour out the holes, which they wont.
Im OCD about my various projects, and dont like to fail, especially when i have alot of time and money invested. Ive been doing alot of reading and asking questions, so my next time, the monotub that im doing next week will be alot better, i hope.

Well I have you here reading this, can you look at my post earlier and tell me what you think, mainly my first 3 part question more then anything else?

A. If you used colonized rye to inoculate a BRF jar, you'd have it to get on the BRF, then put your verm layer on top of that. It should work just fine. Look up G2G (grain to grain) teks for this.

B. Flesh would also work, but this would be cloning, not MS. So you'd want to do this with mushrooms that are particularly vigorous, aesthetic, or some other trait you want to repeat.

C. "Better" is a description bound by duality, which I try not to participate in.

Do what works for you, what calls you, and what feels best. This is the best "better" you can get IMO unless you are violating someone's free will. If you can't hear them yet, the mushrooms are thanking you for allowing them to cultivate your mind to sustain their survival.
