Ordering gypsum for my bulk substrate tonight. I'm going to have about 10qts of spawn and just double everything in Daimon5050's tek. If I did the math right I believe I should need around 3 quarts of gypsum for my substrate(10%)...but the bags are in lbs so do I need to order the 1lb bag or the 5lb?
and...what are your favorite bulk recipes? I'm using wbs for my spawn

Get the 5 lb. You can never have enough gypsum.
3 quarts is a lot of gypsum.

So you should add about 8 cups to your doubled recipe.

Notahacker is right, that was completely uncalled for. Shit like that is what gives the Shroomery a bad rep If it were a person who's been around here a while, then it might be another story, but the OP is pretty new, and that's a great way to drive new people away from our boards, and mycology in general.

*edited* being behind a keyboard doesn't give you any fucking reason to be disrespectful to another human being. I accept the apology you posted later down and I'm not really worried about it...but it's people like you who drive the new people like me away and remember, eventually this place dries up without new people(read about this place anywhere else and you know how horrible of a fucking reputation it has...and I can see why).
RR: I can't exactly do that. There's two places in my town that has farm feed and neither of them even know wtf gypsum is(same with rye berries, useless fucks) and I'm sick of driving all over town and wasting my gas so I'm just ordering enough for now and not some ridiculous over the top amount that I'll never use. Because the $5 50lb bag? Yeah, that shit and any other deals people speak of don't exist in my part of the country.
Deathryder and Notahacker: Thank you for actually being nice and trying to help me. It's rather disheartening to just have people lash out at you for no real reason other than being new...so thanks for being cool to new people

Just tell the farm boys you need rye grain instead of calling it berries. Gypsum is used here in the northeast by being added to clay soils to make it more tillable and have proper draining. Talking the lingo helps a bit. That said, my local farm store only sells small bags in the off season.
Don't have a cups per pound figure yet though.

Rye grain is another good way to word it. They had rye grass and I believe I could've used that but if I can choose between rye GRASS and wbs, I'll just take the wbs. I was just wanting to try the rye berries because they seem a little easier to prep vs wbs.
THANK YOU for letting me know what exactly gypsum would be used for in the farming world because if I told them I wanted to add it to my substrate to maintain a pH level...I think they'd still be lost(not that farmers are dumb by any means, I'm just working on something they most likely have never done before, growing shrooms). Or do farmers use it in their soil to maintain the pH level there as well?

It's primarily used for adding calcium, sulfur, and it helps keep your grains from sticking together.
As for grains, yes they are easier than birdseed. I was a wbs fan until I tried rye, never going back again. If you are in a place that is on azurestandard's shipping route they offer a good deal on rye.

I just wanna say you didnt have tgo stoop to his level and start calling names and swearing. The reason responces like that get thrown around on here is because it seems like common sense to some people to just use google or the search engine to figure shit out. It gets annoying to have to answer the same question 20 times or answer something that took 10 seconds to google and figure out. Not saying he was justified at all. Just playing devils advocate.
As for driving around town to get supplies. You know that you could just use a phonebook and get the #'s and call before you hop in the car and waste the gas. Also if you are going to a mom and pop garden store and you are friendly and dont seem like a punk kid doing something wrong they will work with you. The store i use will go out of his way to order me stuff since I was friendly and talked to the guy. He will even order it if he doesnt make much on it. On my 4 cu. ft bag of verm I saw his price and he only made 4 bucks selling me it from list price. I tried to give him more buck he refused maybe that why he likes me lol. He did tell me i couldnt get powdered gypsum but he got me pelleted instead works just fine. His excuse was that he could only get pelleted because it all they carried since it doesnt clog up large spreading machines like powder would.
As for finding rye berries like the other said call it grain. If you cant find it there you could always try and find a health food store. Its what I ended up doing when i started off and i still do it because the people there know me and now give me a 15-20% discount even if i buy small quantities. It maybe more then going to a feed store but i like the people and its helping them stay in business. Also its where i get my agar from.
As for the cups to pounds question. You wont know till you get some infront of you and weigh a cup. You are trying to use a measurement for volume to figure out a measurement for mass. So with out knowing the substances density you wont know. However as i typed this there is a way to figure it out. If you know the dimensions of the bag and the weight you can figure it out. So i googled a 5 pound bag its dimensions are 11 x 5 x 3 inches which = 165 cubic inches. Now that we know that 5 pounds is 165 in^3 we can get it down to 1 pound by dividing by 5 which = 33 in^3. So 1 pound is 33 in^3. which needs to be converted to quarts and we all know (well i used google) that 1 quart = 57.75 in^3. So then we take 1 pound at 33/57.75 = 0.571428571 US quarts. So 1/2 a quart is roughly a 1 pound.
Now note those dimensions were of the bag so they are not going to be exact in anyway. Since the bag may have 4 inches of air space or anything else like that... So take the .5 qt = 1 pound as ball parked on the low side most likely.

Yep, I did stoop to his level because I felt somewhat offended at being called retarded when I did search...this forum. It didn't occur to me to try google since I figured it was an odd question not many people would need to know the answer for. So I figured I'd post the question and if someone in the future had the same question, they could easily find an answer here. I'm not here to make enemies by any means, I need the help from people here. His remark just kinda irritated me. My apologies.
I've tried the phone book for some stores, but some cases it's an excuse to get out of the house and do something. Most folks are nice and easy to deal with, they just don't know what exactly I'm looking for but it's been difficult to describe what EXACTLY the items I need are for in other uses because no one around here even knows what mycology is and even though everything we use is used in agriculture, I don't know what the more common terms for things are or what to describe their use as. What I've learned about gypsum and rye grain here will definitely help me in the future and I appreciate everyone's help.
Thank you for showing me that math Zepski, I can use that in other applications too
