**why does everyone say incubators are pointless??**
    #16812139 - 09/08/12 04:06 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Ok everytime I ask someone a question about incubators they always say something like, they are pointless unless u live in a garage in Alaska...

I don't know about you but I don't keep my house at 86F which is apparently the optimal temp for cubensis mycellium growth...

I usually keep it around 72-76..... so why slow down colonization by keeping your jars 10F or more below optimum temp?

Someone with more knowledge will post. My theory is warming of jars too directly help bacteria/contams grow.

86F is NOT optimum, that is outdated information.  Optimum temperature is between 70F and 80F.  An incubator is only beneficial if you live in a cold climate where keeping your grow space above 65F is a problem.  Colonizing jars do best sitting out on a bookshelf or table where they will receive ambient light, which helps them establish a circadian rhythm and colonize more vigorously.

Wow being gone from this site for 2 years I must have missed alot....you said jars should have light and not be in total darkness?

And I got the 86F thing for a chart that say growth of mycellium in millimeters vs temp (cubes and cyans)

Temps 80*F+ are the perfect temps for bacteria growth as well as many other contaminates like mold. Although cube mycelium does colonize faster around 80*F as opposed to around 70*F, it's safer to not push the line. Besides you are only speeding things up by a few days.

I believe 86F was supposedly the optimum temperature for fastest growth of an agar culture and I'm not even sure how accurate it is. You have to consider that mycelium produces heat as it colonizes. In a jar the temperature will already be higher than the ambient temperature. In particularly large substrates even room temperature can be a bit high.

Feel free to experiment with different temps but I've never seen a noticeable increase above room temperature and it's a known fact that contaminants, especially bacteria thrive at those warmer temperatures.

There can also be other problems with incubators like blocking gas exchange and trapping in moisture that could dampen the dry verm layer. Heating pads seem especially problematic with accidentally overheating the substrate.

So should jars not be in total darkness?? Ive always put them in total darkness and was to not to even open the box for 2 weeks?....

Nah that's old info that they need to be in darkness. I wouldn't go through the trouble of special lighting just for coloization or anything but you can leave them out in the open for sure.

Ok, does it hurt for them to be in total darkness?? Because I have a very large stealth clothes dresser set up where the whole inside is hollowed out (empty Space) except a couple access drawers....and I got my jars in a rubbermaid tote and will be putting a large hpoo/straw monotub in there also in a rubbermaid tote

Really don't want to keep jars in the open because its a rental house and they do routine work...change central air filters spray for bugs etc.

In my experience at 80 F colonization time is sped up by weeks compared to  70 F, but I have yet to do a side by side test.

For my next inoculations I will leave half at room temp (70-72 F) and incubate the other half at 80-81 F.

are you growing from spores?

Well do whatever you gotta do. It's not going to kill them to colonize in darkness. You might try to make sure they can get a little air in there even though they only need gas exchange for the colonization phase. I'd put some more thought into how you're going to fruit them, you're going to need light, lots of fresh air and be able maintain the humidity. Might not be as easy as you think you keep them hidden there and still provide that.

Oh I know my last grow was a hpoo mono in a closet with little more than 5 gallons of hpoo, just took lots of fanning....and the substrate itself kept the humidity up.

At about 6in. Thick it created some monssssters lots of footlongs with 5in. Caps
Wasn't in a rubbermaid tote though.

I dont see any benefit to giving a spawn jar light when its going to be broken up and mixed anyways.

They colonize just fine in total darkness, if you ask me, thats some old and out dated information, and if it isnt yet, it probably will be in another ten years.

But is has been proven that they colonize quicker with ambient/indirect light....do a test...g2g 10 jars and put 5 of them in darkness, place the others on a shelf...i bet the ones on the shelf will reach 100% quicker...
