Deftones (Deftones)

Okay, Deftones new self-titled album fuckin rocks.

It took me a few listens to get used to it, but god damn, this is some of the most intense shit I've ever heard. Their dynamics are beautiful, they space stuff out great, and you can just feel the pissed off-edness in certain parts. Chino is a madman.

There are some really nice mellow grooves and downright beautiful parts as well. Haunting.

I'm really into the track "When Girls Telephone Boys"

This album really grew on me. Two big thumbs up. Deftones are one of the very few sincere rock bands out there I believe.

personally I think it's a very good album, but definately not as good as their previous work.... honestly I was a little let down.  I still love the deftones, but I'll stick to my white pony thank you

Adrenaline is my all-time fav actually.

It's strange, each of their albums took me time to get into, but then they become like my favorite cds... I think they have this original flare that my brain can't grasp right away.

I'm just now getting into White Pony alot more, and I've been hooked on Around the Fur for awhile.

If you're in one of those intense mindsets, smoke a bowl(optional), and put their new album on with headphones, I think you'll be surprised what you hear. (even if youve heard it already)

I have this saying that "you've never really heard an album until you've listened to it while stoned".
Especially on a great stereo - you pick up all the things your sober ear didn't notice at the time.

Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

i was digging thru my old CDs the other day and pulled out adrenaline.  i got this CD waaaay back in the day when it first came out at the suggestion of my friend.  i didn't like it so much back then, as i was more into nine inch nails and tool.

i was listening to this CD the other day tho, and wow - that CD is wicked.  the sound is great, first off, it has this shroomy urban black/white feel to it.  but the lyrics are really wat hit me.  i thought the guy was middle eastern when listening to the cd, because i was picking up him referencing Allah, and he was totally trash talking white dudes.  like, one song it's like he's singing to his girl saying "don't ever mix with white meat".  and another song he's sayin' "black sinner, you'll never get my cum til you comfort me!".  like he totally trashes out white dudes and black dudes.  when i got done listening to the CD, i was thinkn "man how did they let that get thru?"

i haven't heard any of the other deftones CDs, but i've read they changed their style and sing less about personal stuff and more about storylines.  i would be interested to hear the riffs, but the total supra-gangster lyrics of adrenaline are what caught my attention.

i mean, i'm a white dude and everything...  but it's still kinda funny.

I don't believe Chino sang about the subjects you're describing.

In Nosebleed, at the part you seem to be quoting, the lyrics are "You won't get to me, til you cover me. I don't need this shit, til you cover me."

The songs in which he does reference racism (such as 7 words) are (to me) obviously tongue in cheek sarcastic references to his disdaining of other peoples' prejudices and not statements of his own opinions.

Also, this thread is seven years old.

haha 7 years

getting that selftitled cd right now, curious to listen to it. i grew up listening to a lot of numetal back in those days but couldn't really find myself getting into deftones. i don't know why.

i'll find out now, see if some deep listening with headphones will make a difference :peace:

I'm not sure what to think about deftones, some of it seemed good to me and I downloaded the discography but I feel like most of it sounds the same and his screaming starts to get on my nerves, I can't help but think of it as the screech of a raptor in jurassic park.

See my shadow changing,
Stretching up and over me.
Soften this old armor.
Hoping I can clear the way
By stepping through my shadow,
Coming out the other side.
Step into the shadow.
Forty six and two are just ahead of me.

"Diamond Eyes", "White Pony" and "Around the Fur" are all near and dear to me.
