Seriously? Trich outside? Outdoor questions. Need input
    #16810286 - 09/08/12 10:06 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So after all this reading that you don't have to worry about trich outdoors, I'm battling with it in an outdoor patch.

I put 7 qts. spawn/ 12 qts. manure/ 3 qts.verm in a hole in a shady moist spot. 1ft x 1 ft is about the size of the patch. It was dry for a couple weeks so I put a couple gallons of water on it every few days. Early this week I got a huge pin set and harvested a lot over the course of the week

However...in the past few days I've noticed a small area of trich in the patch. I scraped it away, it came back, and have been scraping it back once a day for a few days now. It's not spreading like it does indoors, it hasnt moved much, but still has spread a little. There's still pins coming up all over the place, some are even right near the trich.

Is there anything I can do to combat this or do I just have to let it run its course?

I don't have any input on this, I just wanted to subscribe and see what our outdoor cultivators have to say

from what i understand, dont worry about a little trich. it is everywhere outside and the mushrooms may find a use for it anyways. it is a problem inside because once all those spores start to release they are a pain to get rid of and they get into everything.. but outdoors it is not a problem.. the trich is gonna be around out there no matter what.

Thanks for the response, I'm not too worried about it, just wanted to get some input because I've searched everywhere for this and couldnt find anything expect that you dont have to worry about it outside. It puzzled me more than anything.

I have another question on my mind too to go along with this outdoor discussion... How long does a outdoor bed fruit for once it starts? As stated already, it's been going for just under a week and has slowed down over the last couple days. There was 3 days of a huge harvest everyday, and has been shooting up a few small/medium ones each day since but nothing like the first few

As long as it doesn't dry from lack of water, it could last several seasons and fruit whenever conditions are right.

Oh and I've got some trich infecting some of my outdoor stuff too. It had trich to begin with so I dumped it outside. It's not progressing but it bugs me to see it staring at me, taunting me of my misfortune.

I have a theory that a 'fully cased' sub will perform better outside. That would mean a layer of peat or verm on the bottom and sides, add sub and then add the top casing layer. This would give the spawn a couple days to get a good hold on the sub before contams arrive. It's extra material and work though, and it would require at least a medium sized bed to justify.

About 30% of my outdoor patches get trich, more common with spend subs than spawned subs but it can happen either way. It's just a fact of life and I've learned to use many smaller beds rather than one large one (not just for contams as I will explain).

When using freshly spawned sub I've had best results making patches with a hole digger, about 6" deep and 3" wide. They seem to do well from a fruit:sub ratio and if a couple contam it's no big deal. I've never had an outdoor grow fruit across the whole surface so smaller beds seem more efficient. It also makes the patches look 'normal', hidden in plain sight.

i used to get trich on mine.. but once i started using fully colonized substrate it worked out fine.. i dont have the problem anymore. i place cardboard on the bottom of where im burrying it for a boundry. trich is more of and inside problem.. as placng a peace of bread on the counter in a dark place in ur kitchen will prove. the uv rays and other factors like bacteria and other microbes help the outdoor grower. let nature take its course:thumbup:

Thanks for all the good replies...I guess it happens more than I thought, there's just not much info posted about it.

I guess I'll have to sit back and watch to see what comes of it, I'm really enjoying doing outdoor cult, can't beat the production. I'm hoping it'll spit out another good heavy flush in the next few days :crazy2:
