What would Radiohead be classified as?
    #1680700 - 07/02/03 05:20 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

I LOVE Radiohead (the newer stuff more than the older rock)... if I wanted to find bands influenced by them or that have the same idea as them - what would I be looking for? What type of music?

Radiohead = post-rock + Krautrock + IDM.

Post-rock = Tortoise, Stereolab, Slint, Ui, Labradford.

Krautrock = Neu!, Can, Faust, Ash Ra Tempel.

IDM = Fennesz, Oval, Funkst?rung, Oval.

(And The Smiths and U2 and My Bloody Valentine.)

The thing I like about Radiohead -- and the thing
jaded hipsters criticize them for -- is that they're
kind of a poppy version of all the cool experimental
music of the last twenty years or so, minus all of
the baggage.

i think radiohead should be classified as soul music.

there are two types of music, soul music and money music. genres are just marketing tools and discussion assistors.

I really dig that ...

But i thought that Time is the deciding factor in that, isnt it? What is money music of today may be soul music of tommorow..It has happened in the past too....

Though individual tastes makes most music and there is more money music than soul....thats capitalism

(Hail to the Thief is number four on Billboard.
Right behind 50 Cent.)

I think Radiohead are marketed differently than, say,
50 Cent, but just as marketed. They're both recording
artists on major labels. You can't prize one above the
other using an anti-consumerism sort of thing when
they're nearly equal.

'Radiohead is "soul" music, the real, authentic thing!
Instead of that silly pop music' = one type of marketing.

That was my point, kind of. They're not marketed
the same. But they're both marketed just as, um,
strongly, I guess.

There's a memo from a Columbia A&R guy or someone
from 1966 or some year in some CD or something
about the marketing of Bob Dylan. And I don't
know anything about it but:

(The way, maybe, that Bob Dylan came with a pop
version of folk music, the subversive, sort of
underground music of the late-50s and early-60s,
is kind of similar to Radiohead coming with a
pop version of the experimental music of the
last twenty years.)

If you're selling records for a corporation and
you're number four on Billboard, you're being
marketed somehow.

It's important to look at how things, especially
supposedly subversive things, are being marketed
to you, maybe, if you care about those sorts of
things.

beta band and the flaming lips have nothing on Radiohead. To me, the closest match is a mix of pinkfloyd and bjork.

however, I would not compare anything to bjork, ever.

Lately, Radiohead has grown on me. I never thought I would have liked them, especially when I first heard them when everyone liked Radiohead. I couldn't get anything out of it, but I suppose it just took some time for me to like them whithout being swayed by others.

I need to hear more tracks by Radiohead. Any speciffik suggestions?

Id recommend Aphex Twin and anything off of his own label plus anything off of the warp label as Thom bought the entire warp back catalogue before they recorded Kid A.

The thing that makes them so great for me is their live performance. Saw them again at Glastonbury last weekend and it was a truly magical moment.

HTTT is great. Radiohead are great. They're one of the all-time great bands. You can't really diss them cause all the arguments are flawed. They make really good music. That's what it comes down to.

If you like the recent stuff, these albums are great:

Remain in Light: Talking Heads
Rock Action: Mogwai
Music Has the Right to Children: Boards of Canada
Three EPs: Beta Band
Hot Rats: Frank Zappa

You should really have these albums anyway
