Questions regardign Damion's Elementary Tek and other Concerns
    #16806665 - 09/07/12 05:51 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

1) – First concern is a sterility issue. With so much focus placed on avoiding containments, it seems counter intuitive to throw colonized spawn into a non-pasteurized tub. If someone could speak on this to ease fear it would be great.

2)- If more than 1 tub is being attempted can Damions tek just be multiplied by the number of tubs aimed for… for instance

3 tubs = 3 bricks coir, 12 quarts boiling water, 6 quarts verm, 15 colonized jars? Or, is there some reason 1 tub should be done at a time?

3-In Damions tek he recommends covering with a trash bag. Is this in addition to the lid or without it? Please explain.

4. Sorry to repeat myself, have look and looked, but does anyone have a tek, preferably w/ pics, for utilizing the container pictured below?

5. If someone was so inclined as to attempt to fruit a jar of rye, would it be sufficient to simple case with 50/50 peat/verm? Or should a bottom level be utilized to keep in moisture?

6. Assuming Damion’s Tek is followed exactly, are there any advantages to adding a casing layer?

All references, link and long winded explanations welcome on topic. Thank you in advance for your consideration and patience, I look forward to learning from you.

1)  While Damion5050's tek is not true pasteurization, it is generally sufficient for our purposes.  When you spawn to a bulk substrate, the mycelium is already in colonization mode, which gives it a 1 up against contaminates that would have to start from spore.  You can also use a true pasteurization method with excellent results.

2)  Yes, you can scale up as needed.

3)  In addition.  The idea is to maintain high CO2 levels during colonization.

4)  I have not seen an exact match, but a search on dub-tubs might give you some similar results.

5)  It's been done before, but you'll get better results spawning to a bulk substrate.

6)  A casing really isn't needed for cubes.

Thank you Deathryder (and I suppose zepski because it is the thought that counts) for your timely response. Investigations will begin immediately on dubtubs, though as i recall from prior research I had yet to see the same style container.

As far as why anyone would attempt to fruit rye without bulking, I would imagine it the result, finally, of having access to  many happy jars thanks to an exponential g2g at the last minute saving the experimenter for starting from scratch. I think he just want to eat mushrooms 9 - 10 days quicker.

Also, what advantage does co2 have on mycelium at this stage? Is it simply because its presence as an atmospheric majority limits containment's while the mycelium colonizes the substrate?

High co2 is needed for colonization.  Also the drop in co2 levels is a pinning trigger

All it is is that you'd heat your substrate up between 140f to 160f for an hour and a half.  Let me grab you a few links, one for a true pasteurization tek, and one for a steam box pasteurization method hosted on the Myco-Tek boards.  This might take a minute since my computer is fighting with me at the moment.

Great info on pasteurizing, though "sufficient for our purposes" is good enough for me. As far as fruiting a colonized rye jar without spawning to bulk, can someone provide step guide using 50/50 peat verm? Is it wrong to assume that since jar is colonized fruiting conditions may be applied immediately?

Also, as far as my peculiar tub referenced above, since the base is so small (short) what ratio coir/verm to sub is a safe method?

In advance I thank you for your superior Budha nature...

edit - Storm.... Groovy... with perlite it sounds as if you werent using a grain sub, (easy to imagine me wrong on this point) .... can you tell me more about your experience, particulaly if you have used them for colonized grain to bulk

You want to try and keep a ratio around 1:3 regardless of tray size.  Out of curiosity, how deep is that tray, it looks pretty shallow?  I'm not too familiar with the 50/50 verm/peat casing tek, but I'll run a few searches and see if I can pull something that looks reasonably well documented for you.

ive done it with grains and cakes, was just playin with the idea..
ive used mostly corn due to the lack of resources, but once with wbs-poo/straw.. i can try it again if you want to check it out.. but it can be done bro, where theres a will theres a way, haha, you can buy deeper tray too.

best results come from the tubs though.. so dont make it a substitue.. shoot for the real deal

Everything I've found on straight casing grains (rez-effect) is pretty out dated.  This looks like the most promising thread I've found: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Growlog&Number=1939974&Forum=Growlog&Words=rez%20effect&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=1939583&Search=true#Post1939974

I really recommend using one of the current bulk teks.  You might have success with the linked tek, but I highly doubt it would be comparable to a bulk tek with coir or poo ect.

I hate to say hello friends (particularly Deathsryder and storm at this point in the thread) but allow me that congeniality. The tub is 21x11x2.5(l/w/d). Also, it has holes in the bottom, which i can if needed provide picture. Obviously tubs will be and are the desired method with all thats been read, but an availability of these tubs in quantity makes me want to utilize them.

i.e just got your last response Death , and will look at it immediately.

Holes in the bottom is a problem.  If those pans are aluminum, they are also a 1 time use deal since mycelium will eat through it.

Cased Grains: Tried it, fucking blows, would rather eat my own dick then do again

Rez-Effect: Tried it, made me think of slamming my balls in a sliding glass door. This tek is worse than the holocaust

Bulk: OMFG WTF AM I GONNA DO WITH ALL THESE SHROOMS!!!!!!!

edit- and I IMO damions method for pasturization is crap (pour boiling water on it) . this is a better wayhttp://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11855255#11855255
