G2G Best Practice Question in SAB
    #16781646 - 09/03/12 01:58 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Planning a g2g attempt tonight.  Using a SAB - question is if I can leave the lid off e master the entire time.  I plan on loosening all lids in the SAB before starting and then plan to just hold the lid of the new jar with one hand while dumping in spawn from the master with the other hand and then quickly returning the lid to the new jar.

Can the master lid stay off the whole time while doing this?

i personally wouldn't, but i'm sure you can get away with it.

i would just loosely set it back on top in between

I got canning funnels for my G2G transfers. Turns out the ones from walmart are polypropylene so they can be sterilized in a PC.

I usually sterilized a few stacks of ten and put them in the SAB before I began work.

I'd do only a few transfers with the same funnel and then switch it out with a sterile one.

those things saved me a lot of time, hassle and mess.

As for your grain master, try to keep it covered as much as possible. The less its exposed to the air, the better. Even in the SAB.

Just did my first G2G two nights ago.  Here is what some of my jars look like.  I must not have shaken them well enough for an even distribution as one side is flying while the other has no sign or even kernels that were from the master.

Should I let them go as is or give them a very light shake and roll?

Same jar, but back side:

Leave them be. You don't want to damage the mycelium anymore than you already have.
Be sure to shake the hell outta your jars after the G2G. I mean extremely well.
My first attempts at G2Gs I had the same problem. Now, I shake hard & mean for 20 seconds after the G2G.
Also, wait to bump for 24 hours.
