Brown stuff on jar glass
    #16804612 - 09/07/12 11:46 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Okay, so I have some WBS quart jars colonizing, and they are going pretty slow. I suspect bacteria, because two jars won't colonize the bottom even though the initial germination happened in the bottom of the jar. One looks like its done except for a small spot on the side that it does not want to colonize, but I can't see any obvious contamination. Here is my question to you all-

Have you ever gone to shake your WBS jars and noticed a brownish smudge on the glass? Is this indicative of bacteria contamination? I washed my WBS pretty good but I'm hoping that the brown smudges are residue, harmless, or that the mycelium can eat the bacteria.

Three syringes were made off of one old print and one syringe went to BRF cakes. One of these got trich right at germination but none of them are showing the brown stuff. The rest are healthy. So I'm assuming that even with a glovebox the contamination happened during inoculation with the trich, and the WBS that syringe was bad. But hopefully not.

I would, but everyone would just say healthy Myc. Because it looks healthy. Also, my jars are all at my girl's place. And to top it off, you can't see the brown smudges when there is substrate behind them, only saw the brown smudge when I went to shake and the grain was all pushed up in the top of the jar. It's not like a nasty mold looking contam, it's just a brown smudge on the glass and I am not experienced with WBS so I don't know if it could be normal

Well... there is a contamination forum that may be better able to help you. One of my WBS jars has a residue, like a thin almost invisible film coating the inside of the jar, which happened after I shook it while still warm from the PC. Makes it look kinda dingy in there, but as far as I can tell everything is still growing nicely.

I dunno if that helps at all. Can you smell anything foul coming from the top of the lid/filter. You're probably fine.
