Couple of tubs I helped out with.

The species is what you'd expect.

The spawn is whole oats and wheat berries mixed together. I just had 2 50 pound bags of oats sitting around but wanted use the wheat. I figured I'd mix it and flush out old inventory lol

Spawn was all inoculated with the same pin clone. Agar wedges.

Sub is just straight up coir/verm. Didn't have gypsum on had at the time of sub preparation. Used the damion tek in large canning pots with lids.

I know the seal on the bucket is important but again, we were working with what we had at the time.
:zomgwtf:

13 days in we decided to unwrap em and see what's up.

One of the tubs seems ok. Nice coverage with an almost overpowering mushroomy smell.

The other one... Not so pleasing. Large bare patches and it smells like... coconut.

We just said fuck it and put em both into fruiting.

Ok so I was going to wait a full 24 hours on this but I'll be crashing soon so I figured I'd try and help it along a few hours early.

The people who own these tubs have an account on here but they are paranoid about actually posting. I'm trying to demonstrate how the shroomery works for them. They're watching this thread and have been curious about why one tub is performing differently than the other.

I'm pretty sure I understand what's up with the patchy tub, but I've been abstaining from telling them in order to try and get them to reach out for information on their own.

So lets hear some suggestions for the eager owners of these tubs.

Who thinks it's contaminated?

Who thinks it's an environmental control issue?

Some hints on what I think it is:

1. How would one usually store colonizing tubs?
2. Principles of thermodynamics and how they apply to mycelial  thermogenesis.
3. Is humid air lighter or heavier than dry air?

C'mon guys, help draw these new members out into the open so they'll come out of their shells and talk with the rest of us!

Can't say that coconut smell sounds too promising but if it's colonizing it might turn out alright. Only thing I could suggest is to make sure you're keeping the temperature fairly low. If it is struggling with bacteria, might explain the smell/metabolites/slightly odd appearance, high temperatures are the last you want.
