Strange/unhealthy mycelia. . unsure of what the problem is, please advise
    #16803094 - 09/07/12 02:41 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

well, i inoculated some jars nearly a month ago and most are doing just fine, but there are a select few that have a ton of stroma (hard and compact with a texture not unlike a smooth ballsack). the jar i have attached to this thread is not 100% colonized; i took it out ahead of schedule to try and figure what was up. the orange tints in it are dried metabolites (amber fluid that beads up on mycelia). . . there were a considerable amount of water droplets on the inside of the jar it was in so that may have been the issue... bottom line is that the texture of the cake is very inconsistent, and no strands of mycelia are visible; it is nearly 3/4 covered with stroma. I have two main concerns:

1) how can i prevent this from happening to jars in the future?
2) is there any way to salvage the cake(s)? whether it be simply giving it time, changing conditions, or scrape the stroma off to give way to new growth?

here are pics

i am using pf tek method (brf and verm substrate). jars were stored at 75-77 degrees, and yes i realize that cake in the picture files are evident of poor contamination control on my part

ANY input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

it smelled a little strange coming out of the jar initially, but i think it was possibly from too much moisture. it smells fine now.

If it smells sweet or sour it's a contam.
I'd say put it in an isolated fruiting chamber if your worried.

it's been in a small fc by itself the past 4+ days or so. it does have a kind of sweet caramel/butterscotch smell about it. i'm going to chunk it for sure but any ideas on what conditions in the jar caused this? the thick white part you see in the pictures has gotten even thicker so it definitely isn't improving.

That looks like a Pint Cake. Odds are the time it took
to colonize is the reason for the Metabolites, I'm sure
they were battling off contaminates. If it doesn't smell
earthy or like mushrooms, it was probably contaminated
long before it fully colonized/birthed.

To keep it from happening again. Use the recommended jars,
it's for good reason. And follow all of the Tek to a T.
I see you din't roll in Vermiculite, so was the cake even
dunked?

By the sounds of it, it doesn't matter if it got dunked or not. It wouldn't have helped as the damage was done. By the description of smell (sweet butterscotch), it definitely sounds like yeast growth or some other undesirable. I've had the samme exact thing happen. I'm guessing its thick/spongy feeling. If left out it'll turn yellowish/brown.
It happens.

yes, the cake was dunked for 12 hours; didn't roll it in verm because i wanted to be able to see the mycelia in the best possible detail to decide whether or not it was improving or getting worse. i haven't ever had problems with yeast before, assuming that is what it is. is the yeast as contagious as other contaminations? as in do i have to worry about other cakes in adjacent bins in the room catching it?
