Exciting results
    #1679905 - 07/02/03 11:31 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Hey all! AFOAF was having some real trouble getting some of his casings to pin. He'd tried one or two previous casings that each produced only a single flush before contams set in and ruined it all, so he was looking for a new form of terrarium made specifically for casings. While this occured, contams set in on one of his four newest casings, so he pulled the other three out of the terrarium and wrapped them in Saran Wrap and set them next to his window. 5 hours later, pinning had started and the mushies were growing. 4 1/2 oz. off of three two cake casings on his first flush. He repeated the experiement with two casings of Haw. and the results were about the same. Apparently you don't even need terrariums for casings, just wrap the pan in Saran Wrap, mist three times daily, and set them in front of a window. Works like a charm. If he'd known this a month ago, he'd have had many, many more mushies... No need for expensive setups or any worrying at all. Cheap and easy.

Usually when that happens it means your terrarium does not have the right condition to initiate pinning so as soon as they hit the right conditions BAM, pins. You should look and see what could be wrong with your terrarium. AFOAF had a terrarium that he was getting small flushes off his 3 cake casings. Then he built a new one because he was running out of room and then once the casing were put in the new terrarium he got results like you did. The problem in his old terrarium was too low of humidity and his humistat was saturated so it alwasy read 95%.

FOAF had an ultrasonic running in his terrarium often enough that H2O was dripping off the walls at all times. Complete air exchange was accomplished through the use of a computer fan pushing air through a HEPA filter. He'd grown 45-50 cakes to completion before trying casings, so it was obviously not the conditions in there. I think that the modified environment was screwing everything up. The casing layer was good enough that adding any extra H2O was drowning the casing. The Saran wrap just kept enough humidity in there that the little fellas were in good conditions to grow. Besides, the terrarium had already produced casings that gave flushes, they just contaminated quickly. Either way, it is nice for a newbie to know that all of the talk on here about terrariums and the $$$ it costs to make one is really not nessecary for growing.

no, it's not. I just can't remember who wrote it. I think it's from one of the canterbury tales.
