Saw dust in h-poo
    #16797407 - 09/06/12 08:34 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So I have a couple free sources but they both say there may be some sawdust mixed in it. Would this be detrimental to the spawn? I'm thinking it's probably not a good idea....

I think it wouldn't be the best thing, though not detrimental.

Saw dust, in addition to having a very fine texture, probably has lignin in it.  While myc can break down lignin, it would waste energy doing so, with little benefit.

My local wal-mart sells hpoo in 25 lb bags, FYI.

Ok thanks! Walmart, really, what is the consistency? Have you used it successfully?

You gotta be careful buying Manure from stores. If you open
the bag and it smells like Ammonia you need to spread it out
on a tarp or something in the sun for a few hours. The smell
will disappear in a few hours if the weather is warm.

A lot of times that manure comes from feed lots and shit.
They scoop manure, urine, and all.

Some woods like Cedar have strong anti-fungal properties, if adding sawdust/woodchips, make sure you know where they came from/what they are. Some wood will completely stall a grow.

Yea, I think I'm going to pass...I wish we had a vendor on here that sold bulk unpasteurized poo. We used to have a vendor named Tennessee Stud, the older heads probably remember him, he was great for a while, cheap prices and good product, then I think he ended up scamming some people...

Don't leach it because that washes away good stuff.
And leaching doesn't rid the ammonia.

Why leach aged manure? Or course you'll still have results.

EDIT:
Found me some help :smirk:

Aged horse manure or cow manure does NOT need to be leached.

Washing/leaching manure does NOT remove ammonia.  It needs to be air dried or cured in the sun to evaporate the ammonia.

You do not want fresh cow manure.  You want aged manure.  Cow patties work fine.  In fact, when I first started growing mushrooms in 1971, picking up cow pies and bringing them home to place in compost was the only way we knew to home cultivate.  All the current teks have evolved from those early trials.

Growers can be successful with aged manure by simply breaking it up and using after hydration and pasteurization.  In fact, I've NEVER leached manure.

yeah be careful with saw dust in the poo. more than most likely it will be cedar, because the smell of cedar helps mask the poo smell, and as stated above cedar is a powerful anti-fungal.
