glove box want ur tips or tricks
    #16794754 - 09/05/12 07:56 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I'm going to be building a new glove box 2morrow and thought it might be a good idea to run it past everyone before I make a huge mistake lol. First off I'm going to use a rubbermain clear tub...now with that said here is where I don't know what to use. Does duct tape work well in this sitch? And I wanna use two pairs of gloves in said box one set that stays in the box and I wanna be abke to use standard medical gloves over the. Gloves. Good idea or bad?

I am a bit confused about the glove portion, but I can tell you what I did, and its worked quite well.

I got some 3 inch diameter pvc pipe fitting things (technical, I know) from home depot.  Heated a blade to cut through the plastic without cracking it.  That's a big thing, cutting thick plastic without cracking it.  It was painfully slow, but I didn't have to go buy another tub.  The pvc rings were siliconed into place.

For sleeves I taped some trashbags into cylinders, and rubber banded them on the outside of the two pvc rings.  They were more than secure using that method and made for easy repairs.

Hope that makes some sense!

Like I have surgical gloves like the ones that go up to your elbow. If I attached the ends of the gloves to the pvc. Once that's done I wanna put disposable latex gloves over the exsisting gloves. So a glove in a glove really.

Ah, gotcha, I wish I could have found glove like that.  lol.

I wouldn't sweat the extra layer of protection.  You'll be spraying the inside, gloves included, with 70% isopropyl alcohol, so the they aren't needed.  Would be like a condom atop another condom.  Or something.

Indeed. lol, I need to hassle my people about such things too.  Make them get you healable injection ports.  The kind that are  on blood test tubes.  Make badass lids.

I just cut two 4" holes in the side of a large transparent tub.  I use chaffing dish fuel to serialize and place the fuel canister between the openings.  The warm air from the fuel rises until it cools then cools and falls back down.  This creates an air umbrella in front of my openings to help stop particles from entering the glovegox.  I have large box but the top still gets a little warm after working for 10 minutes.

Hello there!

For tips i will go off my experience...

Using gloves that are physically attached to the box has only hindered what little movement i already have. Not only that, but i have large arms and hands so it was incredibly difficult to get my hands inside the gloves without totally jacking up the contents of the box and sometimes ripping them off.

I have since attached tyvek sleeves to 2, 4" pvc plumbers couplings that i have screwed into the box.  They are stretched over the coupling and taped down and around the coupling and the excess sleeve is pushed into the box.

When i use the box i sanitize it as normal and then put on some regular latex gloves, and douse my hands in alcohol just as i enter the box.

The box isnt sealed 100% of the time, but after my arms enter the box they create a seal.

This has dramatically increased the range of motion i have while using the box and ease of use while entering the box.

I wanted to have a totally closed off box but IMO this works better for me. Do what works best for you.

Hopefully this has given you something to think of.

Peace and goodluck;)

P.s.- for cutting the holes for your arms or pvc/whatever you attach to the box... trace the hole you need and use a soldering iron to cut the hole. Its kind of a slow process but the plastic in these bins breaks and cracks VERY easily and this is an excellent solution!

I personally did what you're talking about doing and I would either 1, use the gloves solo and replace them every time, or 2, use a latex or other type of glove over the other gloves and replace the latex glove every time.

Using a glove over a glove will help keep your long gloves in good shape longer but you will have to make sure they are cleaned very well before each use or you could spread contams from project to project.

If you use just 1 layer of glove it is hard to keep them through more than 1 use because you do things like get around fire, and sharp objects. I have both burned my glove and also cut/poked a hole in them.

I see exactly what you're saying and I suggest just getting multiple pairs of the long gloves and just throwing them out after each use or atleast after any damage is done to them. Just make sure you clean them VERY well so that contam isn't spread.

EDIT: Also, I found it much easier to just cut the holes for my hands/arms with a round hole bit on a drill and going slowly. Don't rush it or you will crack your tub for sure.

What I did was this....
Took 2 tubs, cut 2 4 inch holes on the long side of 1 tub. about 12 inches apart from center to center, took my gloves and cut the end of the sleeves in 4 places so that I could spread it out on the outside of the tub (kinda like the top of a cardboard box looks with the flaps) and tape around them carefully covering any holes with duck tape, then taped around the gloves on the inside as well. Then I took a sharp blade and cleaned up my tape job so that I had the maximum view area possible without having to worry about any tape coming undone.

Also, when it is time to replace your gloves, dont undo the whole tape job, just cut the old gloves about 4-6 inches down from your tape job and tape your new gloves onto the sleeve of the old one. This makes it much quicker and also lengthens your sleeve length.

Then when I want to use my glove box, I take them into my small room with all of my other supplies, spray the air with air sanitation spray, I spray both glove box tubs down well with bleach water and wipe them down well. Put all of my CLEAN supplies into the bottom tub then take the unaltered (unless you need to tape over holes from lid latches) and put it on top flipped upside down. Then I take duck tape and tape around the seam of both tubs. I then spray a small amount of bleach water in the air followed by air sanitation spray and let sit for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes I spray the air sanitation spray 1 more time and get to work.

Works perfectly fine for me. Obviously this isn't the best possible way to do things but if this is the route you're going to take, it is what I would suggest.

Good luck bud!
Keep us updated.

I built a decent glove box by using a rubbermaid type tub and 2 smaller containers that I used as arm holes. I traced around the bottom of the containers on the tub with a marker to position my arm holes. Then I got a small hole saw and cut out most of the plastic inside the line. Then with a grinder with a very fine blade I cut all the line out and neatened it up with a fine file. I cut the bottom off the containers about an inch from the lid with the grinder, and cleaned them up with the file. They slot straight in the holes I made, and didn't even need silicon like I was planning. The tubs are hard to work with because they are crack easily, but worth the effort if you take the time to shape them right.
Here is a pic of my one...

this is not ideal since cardboard is porous and can harbor alot of baddies.

Total cost to bake the glove box above was $15. And about an hour stuffing around to get the bits to fit together just right

Mine also looks very similar to Onlinetropicalfrenzy glovebox however I don't have the caps for the armholes. instead I have a couple of plastic bags from the grocery store that I taped and put in the holes, then I cu a small slit in both of the bags just enough to fit my hands through. I think that Onlinetropicalfrenzy looks more professional though

The picture OP posted and the tek he got from another person on shroomery, but it is a solid glove box none the less. I'll see if I can find the thread/tek.
