***BRF cakes as a spawn???***

What do you guys thinks about using pf cakes as a spawn instead of a grain.
I know its not always the most recommended but I have no pressure cooker. Also I have had the most luck and the fastest time doing this method.
Last time I spawned like 5half pint jars to 5gallon of horse manure from the amish....the whole mnotub was fully colonized in about a week and I had amazing results.

It works. I've used a cheese grater to shred the cakes before spawning.
Check this out about fractional sterilization:

I've just always used as sandwich baggy and broken up with my fingers. I've read lots of things that say a grater is too hard on the mycellium and takes a long time to recuperate.
I've evnr took a colonized cake and spawned it to big canning jars (1qt? Maybe) of popcorn (when I had access to a pc) And they were colonized in no time.

Dude it works very well. When I first tried manure I used a bunch of brf cakes. I put em in a bag, crumbled them and spread evenly. As above I have also read that it can be a bit rough on the myc. Cakes crumble really easily and I think they work best that way.

You have to use a lot to equal the amount of grains but it can be done. It used to be more popular on here years ago. Often termed "crumbling" the cakes. I've done it with a cheese grater.

It takes more spawn? Weird. I used 5 half pint to 5 gallon of horse manure and it worked wonders.

It takes the same amount of spawn. I think he means alot of 1/2 pint jars to equal quart sized grain jars. I first got into bulk with cakes. There are a bunch of haters that dont like it though.

Yeah that's what I meant. The amount will be the same but more jars because they're small. It might have some other unseen benefits too. No exposed grain to cause contams, or hidden bacterial contams that frequent grain spawn ect.

Verm does have nutrients. It's actually a pretty good bulk substrate material. RR

I had no idea vermiculite has nutrients I thought it was more like perlite just for moisture content...
What nutrients does Verm provide RR?

Uh yeah, You could spawn them to anything. But why would you use straight verm?

Straight verm is easy, that's why I do it. I was just curious about the ratio when using brf cakes seeing as how they already have so much verm.

verm may both have nutrients and be easy but good things don't always come easy. Newgrass, the myc isn't going to enjoy the straight verm . Id imagine it'd be quite reluctant to colonize it.
