ID request

Hi, I just found these specimens growing literally outside my front door and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on what they might be. They were growing in some fairly sandy soil (I'm in the SE suburbs of Melbourne, Au, near the beach) with a bit of dead plant material around from the Camellia trees they were growing under and from the vines growing on a fence just behind them. Sorry I haven't got around to doing a spore print yet but I will do if anyone thinks it is worth it. Thanks a lot for any advice... Dan.

They belong to the genus Coprinus. Go back in a day or two and all the caps will be melted/tattered/gone. Not active.

OK, thanks very much for the info GumbyDude. If I request another id in the future I will try to include more detailed info, but I had a feeling these would be fairly easily identified. I found it kind of fun taking photos of mushrooms, am I weird?

Yep, those look like inky caps to me. If you try to take a sporeprint they'll basically just ink black all over whatever you're printing on. I get a variety of them growing in my yard, a little bit larger and shorter than yours. They have the trademark ruffles potato-chip edges that give away their identity. If you ask me they're pretty though.

What about those mushrooms in the right of the third photo though? Are those another species, or would those just be young coprinuses?

Those just look like young ones. If you look at each of the photos (especially the 3rd and 5th), you can see a full range of specimens from the smallest to the biggest and oldest.

Good question, though.

Happy mushrooming!
