Looking for QUALITY hygrometer
    #16790703 - 09/05/12 01:00 AM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So far I've wasted about $100 on shitty analog and digital hygrometers (even an expensive synthetic hair hygrometer) that I could have bought a nice one right from the start and save myself a headache. I've spent hours searching the forums for reputable quality hygrometers that stay accurate above 90% RH, but found so many mixed and often contradicting opinions . Many people even say hygrometers simply aren't worth it. I'm very methodical and find comfort in being able to measure all the variables accurately. In other words, I'm too inexperienced to eyeball my SGFC to tell what the humidity is at.

From my research I've noticed these two hygrometers were mentioned the most:

This expensive steel cased synthetic hair thermo hygrometer: taylor5565

And this more affordable digital thermo hygrometer: Caliber III Digital Hygrometer

Now from what I understand the synthetic hair hygrometers are supposed to be very accurate but need to be exposed to the extreme opposite humidity 10-12 hours a day. That just seems like a huge pain in the ass and hardly worth it!

And everything I hear about digital hygrometers is that they crap out above 90% and can't even be calibrated. Which seems like a complete waste.

I'd like to know what all of your opinions are on hygrometers as I'm looking to find the best one possible for around $100. I'm willing to spend quite a bit for that peace of mind about my growing parameters as I'm still relatively new to mushroom cultivation.

So PLEASE... Any information and knowledge you guys have on hygrometers will be very much appreciated. If you own one that works wonders for you please post a link.

Thanks a bunch!

Hygrometers are shit. Get over the methodical thinking an put it in the right place for this hobby = cleaning and sterilization.

Nothing really needs 90+% humidity as far as animals and humans and plants are considered so there isn't much of a demand for hygrometers with that capability and the ones for generic normal use aren't accurate.

In this hobby after some practice you'll be able to tell what's lacking with your grow by how the mushrooms are responding to the environment. Then with your methodicalness you make changes and document an see how things progress and degrade.

This is a hobby of patience and adaptability. If there were an exact guide on how to do a monotub with 90g dry yields your first time everyone would be doing it. But there isn't and the solution isn't some overpriced hygrometer.

Save your money.
Be patient.
Practice, practice, practice.

Animals, humans, and plants have different requirements from fungi in the fruiting stage, which do want 90% or greater humidity during fruiting.  It's hard finding a hygrometer which is accurate and will stay accurate in that range.

The link above to the Fischer is the one I use and it's a quality tool.

That makes a lot of sense as to why these hygrometers seem so hard to come across.

As far as using experience and patience to gauge my humidity, that seems like a difficult feat for a newb such as myself. There are so many variables that go into getting great flushes that it's damn near impossible to isolate which attributed the most. I feel like a reliable RH reading would be one of the best ways for me to gauge whether my SGFC was built properly and if my misting/fanning techniques are correct.

Everyone has been there. I've been in the hobby for a little over a year and for the most part I can tell when my mushrooms need more or less water/FAE/ge. I'm definitely no pro by any means but I got no complaints with yields.

An yah some plants and animals need rh in the 90%+ range but I don't think there's enough of a market to mass produce them you know? However if one of the vendors created their own or sold a reliable one like the one RR posted they'd probably make a lot of dough!

Yeah too bad there's no mycology specific hygrometer. People at the pet store always look at me funny when I ask for one that can read accurately over %90 they're "like wtf kind of lizard do you have!?". And at a cigar shop it's an even funnier reaction lol.

I got mine on amazon for $6 just a plain humidor hygrometer.  Works great after you calibrate it for high humidity.  I compared it to my $800 analyzer that I use at work and it was win 3%.

it's a little pricy but is very accurate. it's the only digital one i know of that works perfect everytime.

God Stamet

That's actually considerable more affordable than other hygrometers I've been looking at. How long have you had it? Have you salt calibrated and wet towel calibrated it? Can it even be calibrated? I hear most digital hygrometers can't.

Any details would be much appreciated.

Salt calibration is not for high humidity levels.  Use the damp towel method.  Digital hygrometers will not work long-term in the humidity levels we use because the transducer gets saturated and the subsequent readings are not to be trusted.

as usual RR is right, but the Extech seems to be the exception to the rule. this bad boy gets right up into the 90 plus RH levels without having to use a damp towel to get it there. i've had it for over a year. all i can say is it's a wonderful tool for accurate RH levels. i've bought the store bought digital hygrometers from home depot and just like RR said they just don't work for longer than 5 minutes lol. you'll have to try it to believe it.
