Drying techs, dry-vs-wet mass, avg mass of single mushroom?
    #16786781 - 09/04/12 01:08 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So in order to figure out why my mushrooms are very weak in the psylocibin department, I need to know exactly what mass I am consuming.  The last time I tried they were very weak, and my scale said "2.5g", but I dont think they were completely dry, as they didn't crumble when I smushed them.  So I have a few questions that have probably been answered before, but I prefer the human interaction if you don't mind

1) Whats the easiest, cheapest way to dry them?  At the moment, I have them in a shoebox with some packs of "silica gel" and a couple pieces of paper towel, and they are drying very slowly.  Could I add a fan, or sunlight to speed things up?  I tried doing it in the fridge as someone previously suggested, but the fridge wasn't allowing them to dry, possibly because it is a sealed environment?  Are they going to get moldy?

2) Whats the average ratio of wet mass:dry mass of cubensis?  Something like 10:1?

3) Since I can't be quite sure if I've reached 100% dryness, does anyone know the average mass of an average dry or wet mushroom (say 2.5" tall with a 0.75" cap)?

4) How can I tell if they are completely dried?  Should they crumble into dust like dry cannabis, or do their internal fibres still remain malleable?

Thanks for any help!

If u plan on growing for a bit, get a food dehydrator...thrift store or ebay.

Yea, whatever it weighs wet just move the decimal point to the left one spot, that will be about what it will weigh dry.

About a tenth of the wet weight.

They are cracker dry when they snap like a cracker...usually 6-10 hrs in a dehydrator using heat.

well obviously a food dehydrator would be ideal, I could have figured that out myself :P

But I'm a poor student, where every $ saved counts, and I was wondering if there were any cheaper ways.  Maybe using a 40w incandescent bulb for heat?  What temperature should I use to avoid killing any alkaloids?

Thanks for the replies, folks!

The actives in mushrooms dont break down until far past 200F...most dehydrators dont make it past 165F...

no not a light bulb...again check your local thrift stores for a 5 or 10 dollar dehydrator....if u plan on only doing a couple of grows then get some damprid, fan dry them for 24-48hrs then place them in an airtight container with damprid for 24-48hrs

Thanks for the temp info.  Why not a lightbulb?  I have a precise digital thermometer (yeah I could afford that, lol) sitting with the cut-up shrooms to make sure they don't get hotter than 200f (98*C in my canadian case).  I've got them sitting 2" above a 40w bulb, and right now they're at 40*C.  I think it could work just fine.

ah, thanks.  I will switch the lightbulb for my low-power space heater.  The electric heating element dries the fuck out of the air, and then it uses a fan to blow air across the heating element.  I'm pretty sure that cheap food dehydrators are just enclosed versions of this.

You could make a 40w ez-bake shroom dehydrator.
