Misting and fanning when uncased and fully colonized
    #16786468 - 09/04/12 12:11 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

So I am uncased and fully colonized in a 105qt monotub and my question is to how much should  I mist and fan to promote the best pinset? I have a 6500k light strung 12in above the tubs also.

A monotub doesnt get misted on the first flush, it holds all the moisture it needs.

Just fan a couple times a day and have loose polyfil.

And that goes for uncased subs also? I was under the impression that misting in combination with light and fanning was what produced amazing pinsets.

I mist my monotub's from start to finish. Doesn't hurt anything aside from promoting side pinning more than light ever will. Do what you want IMO, I like to leave my poly loose to keep FAE up and mycelium off of my mushroom stems. I end up misting about 4 times a day.

Well u want evaporation, and if the sub has enuf moisture, by misting I would think ur not giving it a chance to evaporate.

But im not sure...about to fruit my first tub right now, im not gonna mist...just fan, we'll see.

I don't mist during the first flush. there is enough H20 in the sub
As for the 2nd i mist and fan by hand ....3rd I do a total dunk .... by putting 2 wooden rods through the 4 holes in the tub ... fill with water and let soak for about 6 hours. drain and fruit...."The wooden rods are used to keep the sub from floating"

I'm not sure if I can't dial in the perfect moisture content or what the deal is but my mono's have had sub par first flushes and tend to dry out fast.

I always get better second flushes than I do 1st. This is why I mist heavily during the 1st flush because I know my substrate is drying out. If things look like they are doing awesome you prob don't need to mist but it's hard to over saturate a mono imo since you can just tilt it and pour excess water down to the bottom.

I just read an RR post that said only soak bulk subs for no more than one hour...any longer and they will be waterlogged. Only BRF cakes get dunked for multiple hours, so i dunno about that.

:whathesaid:

Correct, simply pour a gallon or so of water over the substrate.
Allow to sit for an hour, then drain off excess.

I think it entirely depends on how dry it is, I soak for 4 hours and am able to pick it up afterwards as a whole piece without it just breaking which means it's still quite firm.

I dry mine out pretty hardcore though.
