The gills are too well developed to be a Chanterelle. Maybe Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca

The colour varies from bright to pale. They can also fade with age/sun/weather.

Remember. True Chants have false gills, false chants have true gills.

Golden Chantrelles look like chicken meat when ripped in half

Also... Vastly over rated for eating... Not that I will not collect and eat 15 lbs of them this year but...
Good, not great!  Makes nice soup and lamb dishes

To me, they both suggest Russula at first glance. The lack of forking of the gills and crossveining would suggest strongly that they can't be chanterelles or false chanterelles.

Guys, take a good look at the last picture. To me, those look like normal chantarelle's false gills, especially the ones on the inside. But maybe I'm just hallucinating.
At first I also thought that it can't be a chantarelle, now I think it's very likely. If it is a chantarelle, it has the most regular looking gills I've ever seen, really beautifull!
Also, smell is the one sure way to identify a chantarelle! Nothing smells remotely like it!

To me the gills looks to deep to be chanterelles.

They do, but look inside the bendy bit, close to the stipe.

What was the habitat? Are those wood chips? Doesn't look quite right to me.

They are not wood chips.  This was a mixed forest.  Those are Oak leaves, sweet gum leaves, and pine needles on the ground.  The mushroom has no staining.  It grew as singles.  There were about six spread around.  I cannot detect a scent because the mushrooms were mixed.

You say there were six of them, do you perhaps have pictures of the other specimens? Because this one is very uncharacteristic and confusing.

This Mushroom dried naturally and is very rubbery. Absolutely no scent now.

It looks a lot like a chanterelle to me.  I find a lot like those that pop up early in the season then dry up.  The sun-worn cap, discoloration on the cap curl, and rubberyness makes me believe it is a chanterelle.

Have you ever found chanterelles before?  If so, try cooking it up like you normally would and I bet it smells like chanterelle (assuming you know what chanterelle normally smells like).

^ This. The gills here are also more crowded than the ridges in chanterelles.
