Die Bugs, slugs, and small thugs! Diatomaceous Earth Protects
    #1678538 -

I'm not a violent man.

But I must protect my shroom garden. These critters have been burrowing into my outdoor beds. I think they like to eat my shrooms and get high.

Anyone know a good, tried, and effective way to irradicate these critters?

Oh wait...I know, diatomaceous earth!

I did a bit of research and found that this material is not harmful when ingested. One should be careful not to inhale it though. This material will also fight of worms, slugs, ants...just about any insect, worm, slug, or other small pests that might invade my garden.

The shells of diatoms are made of silica. This silica breaks into small shards which damage the skeleton of insects and breaks the skin of worms.

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) is my new friend! It is non-toxic, safe for use around foods (it's even used in foods), and easy to obtain. I'm headed to the store ASAP!

I use an iron phospate based bait, it?s non toxic for living creatures except for snails and slugs.

I've been using an iron phosphate treatment for a couple of weeks now. It didn't stop all of the slugs or the isopods. I have pins that get eaten as soon as they pop up. I'll get rid of them one way or another.

do you sprinkle a perimiter like salt? or do you just toss it all over the patch? do you bury some under the ground? do ya mix it in with the dirt?
how exactly do slugs n' snails travel?
above ground? underground?
im fed up with my outdoor patches being raided nightly.
im this close to saying fuck-it to growin in the ground and switch to flower pots.

i hear beer is good for getting slugs. although i wouldnt put it on your patch. leave it on the sides... not too close either. but then again, i think i read another thread about using beer as well. you could always torch your lawn of everything but your patch...? lol... that might not be a good idea. I have also heard of scented oils being a good bug repellant. Using lemon oil? or something around your house is suppose to keep ants and things away. I have a mint plant in my back yard and its constantly being eaten... sons a bitches!

all of the above really. use a combination of applications. for example, mix the DE into your verm(/coir) before casing as well as putting down a barrier. IME a double barrier (concentric circles) proves more effective as small breaks in a single barrier are fortified by additional barriers. the double barrier "tek" works well for salt which tends to dissolve pretty quickly.

I had a girly friend wake me up this morning and had to work late this evening. I still need to find some time to get to the store. Urgency is my attitude at this point. The slugs are eating my pins faster than they can grow.

The fountain/pond is one of my next projects. I love frogs.

Do you see the dry rot in the background of that photo?

Kramer sounds like he is either being funny or doen't understand the thread.

At this point it seems I am tripping the slugs in my neighborhood for free. If I hear any stories about psychotic slugs I'm going to pretend like I don't know anything.

I had the same problem josh. My pins were getting eaten and some of them dryed out. I simply put pasteurized straw on top and I havent seen another eaten pin yet. I think they must have a hard time crawling over it. Every night I go out and try and pick any slugs I can see. Try it out in combination with the Diatomaceous Earth. Where can you buy this at?

What if you simply ate the slugs?
