SO i cased some cakes with 50/50 verm/jiffy mix and one is done on its first flush, i was wondering if i am supposed to dunk it or not for another flush? Does casing take dunking out of the equation?
This is my 2nd grow and i also wanted to share some pics. So glad i have access to a community thats helping me perfect my hobby thanks everyone!
50 pf tek jars, around half were cased; the other dunked and rolled.

Here's an abridged RR quote from an old thread.
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: Here's how I do it. First, wash the entire casing under the faucet to remove the old casing material and any contaminant spores that may have landed during the previous flush. Next, place the casing in a tub of plain tap water. One tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water is optional, but commonly used and the mycelium can easily withstand that level of bleach. Put something on the casing so when the lid is placed on the container, the casing will be pressed completely under water. In this picture, four shot glasses were put over the casing, then the lid was put on the box, and the entire thing was placed into the refrigerator for 24 hours. RR

Here's the thread. You should read the thread in its entirety to soak up all the extra info surrounding this quote.

Casing is putting a non-nutritive layer over grains or a bulk substrate and in some cases Crumbled/Hole Cakes. Is this the actual casing you speak of? Or were the Cakes crumbled and then spawned to a Bulk Substrate.
Sorry shamanamba, I must disagree. At one point and time that might have been the way to do it, but as you can see that was over 7 years ago. Not saying it's wrong or won't work. Newer posts prove this.

RogerRabbit said: The problem with dunking large substrates is they break when you lift them out of the water.
Simply pour a gallon or so of water on top of the substrate and let it soak in for no more than one hour before pouring off the excess.
You only soak brf cakes for several hours. A bulk substrate would be waterlogged if you did that.
None of this is new since 2010. RR
This is how I've always Dunked/Re-hydrated Bulk Substrates(casings)

Never.
If you soak a cased substrate for more than 2 hours, it will be completely waterlogged. The 24 hour soak is only for brf cakes. As I've typed here repeatedly for many years, it's best to allow the cased substrate to sit under a slow running faucet for an hour, so the water fills up the tray and runs over the edge. Afterward, dump out any remaining water from the tray and place back into fruiting conditions. RR
Maybe it differs on size of the Substrate? I do it with even small tubs.

lol ya got me. 50/50 verm and jiffy is a casing layer. I'm just wondering why OP used a casing layer on cubes.
That RR quote was just one of the first things I found that seemed relevant. But I'm quickly coming to the realization that the search function on this site can be confusing as fuck when trying to dig up quotes to answer questions.
for example:

Quote:
RogerRabbit said: Gypsum is not a pH buffer. RR

gotta be really careful about the context of quotes lol

Yeah, usually when I hit up the Search bar. I put in a "Newer Then" so many years, usually 3. That way I can find the most resent info. There's a lot of stuff that's been learned over the years.
