Infected jar. Now what?
    #16784307 - 09/03/12 10:11 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

A friend's grow has 5 B+ jars and 5 Golden Teacher ones.  The B+ ones took off in colonization like they were off to the races.  The Golden Teacher ones have been much slower going, but they have colonized.  One of them, while showing healthy colonization, also shows a strip of a green patch.  It looks like the infected colonization that came with the grow kit and that we've seen online.

Do we?:
1. Discard the whole thing?
2. Bury the contents of jar in his yard and sterilize the jar for future use.
3. Keep it growing just to see what an infected jar looks like as it grows.

Is there a danger of an infected jar infecting the rest of the project?

We're wondering how this happened.  One of us may have inadvertently touched the end of the syringe without gloves on before the needle was put on.  We're wondering if all of Golden Teacher is infected and that's why they're so much slower than B+.  Their rate of colonization is like a hot rod compared to a Yugo.

When in doubt, throw it out.  If you can post pictures we can give you more information, but when it comes to contaminates, there's rarely any saving them.

Never open a contaminated jar indoors.  You might get a few fruits out of it if you drop it in the compost bin, or bury it in a garden bed.

If you don't see any obvious signs of contamination, proceed as normal with the other jars.  When you take the lids off, smell a few of them, they should smell like mushrooms, any other scent is a sign of contamination.
