King of the Hummingbird Feeder.

A few days ago I set up a hummingbird feeder in my backyard. At first, everything was working out just fine, a few hummingbirds a day would come by and drink the nectar. But now, few birds are able to drink. There is one mean hummingbird, whom I think is a male, that defends the feeder by chasing all the others away. He might be trying to get his mate on or whatever, but it's become a real problem. Rarely any birds are able to feed because of this.

I want to see more hummingbirds, but don't know what to do...

Your post lead me to read hummingbird feeder reviews and I stumbled across thisQuote:
As I write this in early September, one young male is kept quite busy defending it--a good sign of a feeder's popularity.
So search around google for "male humming bird defending feeder" which, may warrant some answers
Not sure if this is helpful at all but, it appears to be common.

set up another feeder a little ways apart from that feeder.

Yeah, I was thinking about that.
Wonder if he would be able to defend both of them, or if another male would take over the new territory.

Setting up different feeders around the yard worked for me.
I had the same problem with an Alpha Bird. He was constant asshole to the other birds, never let them feed. They really are quite fearless when it comes to their territory. The nonstop dive bombing is pretty crazy to watch. Enjoy the entertainment

I have watched many different feeders in different locations and there is always one (we name him dick) that guards or defends the feeders. Not sure what the reason is, guessing dominance of some sort.
It is kind of fun to sit there and watch one bird try to defend 4 feeders form 8-10 other hummingbirds. You can actually here them make contact with each other in midair as dick tries to ward of the other birds.

So I've got a grand total of 4 feeders set up around the house which has attracted at least 8 hummingbirds, 4 of which I'm almost certain are males. The males have been camping out the 4 feeders waiting to rape whoever comes near their claimed spot.
I should just fill the feeders with date rape, because I'm pretty sure that's what's going on.
These are definitely Texas hummingbirds, they like their property and don't want anyone else near. If they had a gun, they would probably kill anyone trespassing. Fuck yeah, Texas...

sounds fun
ps I hope you aren't still adding red color, completely unnecessary and costly to boot. use C&H Pure Cane sugar too they prefer it to beet.
This year I had a male Rufous doing some very cool J shaped dives right at me with some crazy veering at the bottom. I mean right over my house and down at me. They are such fun. I am worried though the population over the past two years is about 20% of what it was. Something is killing them maybe these fucking windmills that look like shit and go whoomp whoomp whoomp as they kill birds. Anyway I used to get literally 50+ on three feeders at dusk during migration not the last two years.

I do not add any coloring as the feeder itself has enough color to attract them. I also read that food dye is bad for them and the food that comes in the feeder uses a special coloring that isn't toxic.
The pic in the OP still had the food the feeder came with which has long since been replaced.

Sounds like a Rufous found your feeder. They can be really mean to the others, about all you can do is put up other feeders out of sight of each other.
