First primordia (all white) then when you see the cap emerging it's a pin.

do you mean how close to sucess is ur friend?
some of the forming spikes of mycilium will form balls called hyphal knots, not all of these will form large fruits, some become pins (distinguished caps) but will abort after growing only a small amount. the closer u keep the fruiting conditions to there optimal standards the more full fruits u will end with.
this site is loaded with pictures too so im sure u wont have any problem finding them.
have fun!

I think maybe what you saw was the rizomorphic growth of the mycelium - my faery godmother has those like crazy She had a question about hyphal knots - she has a bunch of little small (~3-4 mm in diameter) spherical nodes of white mycelium - is that why hyphal knots look like? If that's what they are, how long does it take to develop from a hyphal knot to a pin? She is eagerly anticipating the fruit

the spikes sound like rhizomorphic growth that is probably in search of moisture. (in my casings they usually occur on the container edge and sort of climbs up where the condensation is) the rhizomorphic areas usually are where pins form but not always. hyphal knots look like tiny specs of perlite, white little nodes that develope into pins. once you see them, start to fan more. At this point the pins need less CO2 to fruit.

At this point? So should we let CO2 build up until they pin?

D'oh! I could have sworn that it said to fan the casing 3-5X a day after it has colonized the casing layers. So I should let the co2 build up till it pins -- got it.
