Casing, Depth vs. Length
    #1677791 - 07/01/03 07:19 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

Ok lets say i have 25 square inches of substrate to use in a casing. Would a 2" x 12.5" layer grow more than a 1" X 25" layer or a 3" X 8.33" Layer? Basically i just want to know what is more important as far as yields go...depth of substrate or how much surface area you spread the substrate across.

IME, I've noticed that it doesn't make much of a difference, but a shallower substrate depth leads to bigger flushes in the first few flushes, and a deeper one produces more flushes. I prefer shallow, myself, but it's harder to case evenly with a shallower substrate depth. I never go below ~ 1/2 inch of casing.

Most people reccomend an inch, but if you're good at casing you can prolly go down to ~ 1/4" (I've had constant good results from this.) Note I also use just peat/lime.

deep makes bigger shrooms and more flush's the larger the casing as in surface area you'll have more room for pins.so go deep and big you'll have a day

But if you had the option of long vs deep which would you choose....choosing both defeats the whole purpose of the question.

deep substrates provide more nutrients and the structure to produce constant flushes. also, shallow casings tend to dry out faster as well, ime

deep "substrates" is what he said....the substrate is the nutricious part of the casing

well, the situation looks like this to me: If you go deep but not long, you get BIG mushies, if you go long but not deep, you get a larger amount of fruits, but they arent as big. So really, go with whatever is easily available to you...
