First Post, Grew for Years-Now Back at it!

Hey All! I have used Shroomery info for years but have been extremely skeptical about posting. I've done research on the safety of posting here and finally feel comfortable about it.
I started out with RR's "Let's Grow Mushrooms!" DVD with the PF tek, then like the title says, I grew bulk for years (rye->bulk monos) & (Fully auto GH w/ casings). I chose to lay low for about two years and now I'm back at one of my favorite hobbies in full swing!
Currently I have 19 Burma and 6 PE quart rye jars colonizing, for a total of 4 22gal. montotubs that will be spawned with coir+gypsum+verm.
I apologize for the rambling, in all reality I just wanted to introduce myself, and to thank all of you for the priceless information posted on here over the years.
(P.S. obviously search function is the ultimate shit.)

Not quite sure what the "glitter-shitz" is, but I'll definitely be sure to add that into my bulk mix haha.

If you really want to see pictures of my colonizing jars I can post them tomorrow I guess. Seems kind of worthless to me though. I'm also kinda worried about taking pictures with my smartphone, is this a reasonable worry?

From what I understand coir+gypsum to a PH of 7-8 has preformed just as well as poo, is my understanding incorrect?

I love coir. If you check out the greenhouse thread that's linked in my signature, I used coir/verm for my bulk trays and had a pretty reasonable yield before I had a psychotic break and got all my shit seized. Starting over again sucks, but at least now I have an excuse to build my dream greenhouse

From what I understand coir gypsum to a PH of 7-8 has preformed just as well as poo, is my understanding incorrect?
It's not incorrect, per se, but to deprive a coprophilous mushroom of it's evolutionary nutrients seems... odd to me.
I think the reason coir/verm is more popular is because you can use Damion's bucket tek instead of monitoring a "proper" pasteurization. In the end, it's another personal choice, much like a lot of other things in this hobby. Do what works best for you, and stick with it!
If you are going to put in the effort of pH'ing your substrate, I can't imagine you being the type of person who wouldn't go to the farthest "trouble" for your mushies. This, IMO, includes and pastuerization. Check out RR's qt jar pasteurization.

Thanks for the info! I may consider that an option after I move out of an apartment. I can just barely get my girlfriend to put up with the smell of PC'ing rye, I highly doubt she'd go for properly pasteurizing poo (say that 5 times fast).

That's a tough one! Honestly, though, if it stinks, it's too fresh to use. And once you hydrate it, it smells like dirt more than anything poo-like. But a particular GF is not one with which to trifle!
I live vicariously through people cultivating! Keep it up!

We'll see if I can convince her after the first flush (as she is one of my potency testers haha).
On another note, Jesus Christ Rayth your pinning strategy is among one of the best I've read! I love the idea of tight polyfill in two of the holes. I bookmarked that page and I'm going to use it on this upcoming grow. Only one question though, the tightly packed polyfill doesn't effect the colonization? (Obviously not though looking at that pinset.)
I just thought CO2 levels must remain consistently high for colonization and consolidation, and my over-analyzing brain wonders if the polyfill effects this?
Great read man, Cheers!

Thanks!
It's mostly common knowledge, but I noticed too many good points were spread out all over the forums, so I compiled!
One of the principles I try to point out is that we've got to pay attention and/or listen to the mushrooms. With this in mind, it's difficult to say any given strategy will work across the board for all growers.
With respect to your specific question... high CO2 is not a great thing for mushrooms. They need to breathe just like us. It's all about balance (the kinky love triangle, remember? ) because too much O2 going through your bin will contribute to evaporation from the substrate (FAE) and encourage pinning perhaps sooner than you want it, or uneven pinning.
What it does provide, however, is increased humidity, which is golden for establishing our pinsets. There's a sweet-spot we have to find given our particular environmental factors. The balance, in some situations, comes from only some of the holes taped, with some stuffed poly.
Ultimately, play around with different combinations, and see what works best in your situation! Given your previous experience, I think it's safe to say you can start trying different variations based on your general theme of what's been functioning for you. Play! Experiment!

I totally agree. Good words of wisdom. And experimenting is what makes all of this so enjoyable, it's an art form to some degree.
Also one question that I had trouble actually getting answered through the search function, does the Shroomery encrypt or in some way annomize pictures that are uploaded? Or must I do that with every picture myself?

The Shroomery does do a scrub on uploaded images so that their source is no longer attached to the file.
