Cubes n' Copes.. but what are these?
    #1677299 - 07/01/03 05:37 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Nice hunting results today.. Well heres some shots of some cubes.. Ive identified the cope cyans, but what are these all white cope looking shrooms? These all grew from cow dung. Heres some comparison shots, the red outlined mushroom is sitting in a pile of what you guys say are cope cyan, they bruise really blue. But the all white ones dont bruise any color. The spore prints are both black, and the cubes were purple. Any input appreciated..

They are called Panaeolus antillarum. Inactive. I'm so happy you could see the difference between the two. They are pretty damn close looking, huh...obviously the antillarum's are pure white, maybe a little bigger.

NICE FINDS THOUGH!!!

thanks for clearin that up, my buddy swore they were cyans and thought they were active.. hehe, the cope cyan are wonderful and produce feelings undescribable by human scripture.. I wish the cubes grew more plentiful here, is there anyway to use the spores of picked mushrooms to colonize more cow patties?

Screw the cubensis...if you're looking for a good experience, I'd just stick with the Copelandia cyanescens.

I hear you can inject spores into an apple and feed them to the cows/horses.

You could probably grow your cyanescens outdoors, however, I've never seen it done. Ive seen it done with cubensis. Especially if you live in the right climate, im sure you could pull it off.

Hello,

Copelandia cyanescens is a shroom of the deep south.
-You will have better chances of finding them the closer you go towards the Everglades the better.

The season of the Copelandia coincides along with the Cubensis'.
-The heaviest fruitings of both mushrooms occurs during the months of July and August for the states which border the gulf coast.

The difference between the two mushrooms are best observed after repeatedly going to several different fields, and over the course of a few consecutive hunting seasons.
-Some fields produce only Copelandia (for the most part). And some fields produce only Cubensis, for the most part. Some fields produce a mix of the both, but the two shrooms will rarely if ever be found growing off the exact same dung.
--In other words, each species seems to proliferate a cow pasture with a certain cope to cube ratio; and that ratio seems to stay very consistant over the course of many year-round studies of these mushrooms.

Keep on shroomin,
GGreatOne234

In other words, i have one field that i would go to to collect Copes.
-And then another field that i would go to to collect Cubes.

Keep shroomin,

Not necessarily so, A field can have both at different times of the season and sometimes, one end fo the field might have copes and the other side cubes.

Usually they grow at different times and as GGreatOne234 said very rarely in the same cow pie.

However there can be one or two varieties of Copes in a single dung heap, which are macroscopically alike but microscopically differenmt.

mj

Panaeolus cyanescens and Panaeolus antillarum are together a lot, i think. I have never found pan cyan. I have proobably seen them out in the field but didnt have time to bruise them wait and see. Do any blue meanie hunters have a special way of telling the differance from the two Panaeolus species? What if i collect all the differant pans I find and take them home. And seperate the ones that are for sure bruised blue. Any tips?

yea i hate those antillarums, i get all excited and run over, hoping for cubes.. but yea, the cope cyans look so similar fresh, that ive kinda lost interest in them, and only look for cubes.. but i have to agree with mj, ive seen alot of cope cyan in a mostly cube field, but not vice versa.. i only wish I knew of bigger, less visible pastures to explore, ive got 2 proven fields that bust out with cubes every 2 days or so, but thats all..
