Can someone clear this up for me?
    #1677156 - 07/01/03 04:17 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

In making a casing, instead of using peat and verm would it be possible to make a 50/50 verm/coir mix? I know that this is a popular casing layer recipe, but would it work for a casing?

Say verm on the bottom, crumble colonized cake atop the verm, then finish of casing with a 50/50 verm/coir layer. let fully colonize then make a casing layer(1/2 in) with more verm and coir? Would this work?

You only need to put one layer over the crumbled cakes. This is the casing layer. You'll get a three layer cake when done right, (AFOAF likes to use) perlite/cake+uncolonized substrate/Jiffy mix, laid out in order that they go into the tray. Moisten each layer with H2O2/H2O before adding the next layer. You'll do fine, this is easy.

casing recipes I regularly encounter that state the use of coco coir usually has a ratio of 60/40. search the FAQ or search the cultivation threads.

verm on the bottom sounds good.

I have read on more than one occasion that using perlite anywhere on your casing is just asking for contams.

FOAF has successfully grown about 4 1/2 oz. of mushies on his first three casings, and they're not very big. Just 4X4 in. cakes pans with two cakes each. Still waiting for 2nd flush to finish, but no signs of contams or anything else. The perlite was put in a microwaveable bowl and soaked with H2O2, then nuked for 5 min. Plastic wrap went around it immediately and had a rubber band thrown around it to keep it sealed until it cooled. Like I said, he has experienced no problems and is close to being done with the 2nd flush... Maybe the contam will set in after that, but who the f*** cares by that point? He'll take 1 1/2 oz. from two cakes, np.

i dont see what the point of the perlite is..... and haveing uncolonized substrate in your caseing is asking for a contamination... perhaps u got lucky... im sure it happens all the time....
but if u just want a standard casing recipie it goes as follows....

take your colonized substrate.... (cakes WBS whatever)
place it in the bottem of your casing pan, level it off, then add your casing on top... cover, incubate, patch, birth... Viola! mushrooms...
no need for a bottem casing layer... that just wastes the mycellum's precious time and energy.....

and as for the 50/50 mix, im sure that will work fine... i like to use coir/verm + oyster shell.... i never really measure out anything, i just chuck some coir in a bowl, add water, then toss in some verm, add a little more water, then add oystershell, and nuke the whole fucker for 10 min..... then let it cool in the oven, and case when its ready....

perlite is a viterous rock that is super heated. it absorbs moisture and slowly releases it over time. hence its use in humidification.

If you do a search in the grow log forum you'll see pics of successfully grown pf cakes using perlite.
