Oyster question...
    #16771090 - 09/01/12 12:43 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have ten regular mouthed half pint jars about ready to be dunked and I was wondering if I am going to have a hard time birthing them. If they won't come out what should I do? Do they still need the dunk if I case? Also if I have to case is it alright to simply dig the cake out with a knife or something? I'm in uncharted waters here so any help would be great! Thanks.

It sounds as if you're fruiting oysters like you would cubensis -- on cakes?

What kind of jars are you using?  If colonization is complete, the mycelium pulls away from the jar a bit, making exit easy if it's a normal wide-mouth jar.  Coupla bangs on something and they're out.

I haven't heard of dunking and rolling oyster cakes.  I'd like to hear more about it!

This thread should probably be moved to the Gourmet (Edibles) section.

The jars are half pints but regular mouthed. I'm following RR's vids.

If it doesn't look like you're going to be able to remove them from the jars without ease it's probably not going to happen.

You have 2 options at this point. I have fruited oysters invitro before but I did quart jars of wbs invitro with coco coir in the top of the jar.

You could simply soak then case and fruit invitro or you can break your jars open and fruit them as cakes which will give you more performance.

Breaking sounds like a good idea. I think I will try that when then time comes.

What are the temps like in your area right now? Oysters will give you a much higher quality fruit when grown in a consistently cool climate.

Also indoors or outdoors?

That's a bit high, expect low weight on caps which isn't worth the hassle IMO. I'm holding off a while until I can keep mine in the 50's-60's during the day and 40's at night.

Good luck, post up pictures when the time comes.
