thought it was till i tasted a bit and it was acrid. also, it has pure white spores. not a lactarius. little help from the experts. I am more of a grower, but love to forage as well...

I doubt it's a Clitocybe. Reminds me of Leucopaxillus candidus quite a lot, or something similar.

It does look like Lactarius deceptivus, but if there is no latex, than is probably a Russula... Russula brevipes perhaps

i don't think L. deceptivus has latex.

Pretty sure these aren't Russula brevipes. Never seen the gills on them get that yellow. Seeing the stem in this instance could help narrow it down. The acrid flavor and the overall shape and texture seem to match L. deceptivus pretty well in my opinion though it still could be another Russula or Lactarius. Coincidentally, I've never been able to coax much milk from Lactarius deceptivus types...

me neither. that plus the yellow staining on gills has me convinced of L. deceptivus.

they were a bit dry and growing among lotsa edible lactarius species but couldnt get any latex to show at all. they were a bit dried out though. they also had that battery acid taste that some of the toxic lacterius sp. have. thanks that was fun... goinng out today looking for lobsters, smooth chanterelles and lacterius corrugis. we found a ton yesterday.
