panicing
    #16766059 - 08/31/12 02:05 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

my question is this i have one jar that seems to be ahead of the curve its already starting to pin but its not fully colonized yet by that i mean there is a little spot about half the size of a dime thats still not covered by the growing fungi so what should i do should i birth it or let it wait? i just don't the pins to get smashed up against the glass which i think is already happening? I know i should be looking around the forums for an answer but i'm a little occupied right now.

Usually if the jar pins before 100% colonization its a sign of a contaminate.

However seeing how yours is so close, I would wait it out and allow it to finish.
Also dunking your cakes with Pins is FINE, do not remove them just be gentle removing
the cakes from the jars.

If the un-colonized spot is really that small, then I would wait. if it was say 10% or
more of the jar then I would say ditch it IMO.
Also I've had spots like that... Turned out it was just verm stuck to the side of the
glass jar when I birthed the cake.

Post the pics. Sometimes vermiculite from the dry layer falls down the sides as the gap between the cakes and the glass widens.

theres the picture of my jar thats being overly active its already starting to pin I recheck the "verm spot" and it shrank and is now goldish dark brown I think thats where a pin is going to start forming? A reason for its activities is its contaminated, I'd say its due from using a correct amount to inoculate that jar with. Even though I know this correct amount if excess can actually hinder the jar more than anything so its probably not that i mean every other jar seems close behind it I think im going to start birthing them?

You should still dunk it for 24 hours and try not to knock the pin off. Seen some in vitro pins grow pretty huge once they're in proper fruiting conditions.

if you have pins, you are doing good.
stop worrying about dumb stuff
you are ok
follow the teks (the mill of them) and you will be ok
if it dosent work out, learn from it
don't make other people decide if you make it or brake it
you have control, keep control...

@snakeinthegrass - i like your response, and i was just checking because of this whole "possible contaminated". I think its going to be odd dunking the one jar while 22 others just sit there trying to colonize haha

sorry if this necro bumps my thread but I'm almost positive now its contamination because the pin heads are starting to abnormally darken and appear to be getting fuzzy I forget what this is called but I read you can let these pins it would just be small mushrooms or something along these lines, can i get some confirmation on this?

Sounds like aborts....
And the fuzziness is do to lack of Fresh Air Exchange

Picture!

EDIT: Are the cakes in fruiting now? Or still in the jars?

I've birthed the one that i thought was finished colonizing, and yes it looks like aborts and how do i improve my air exchange should i get a fan and place it on top of the FC? also i feel i may have made the fc with too few holes as well
