noob questions about colonization

I've read a lot in the past couple months, enough to be somewhat confused with all the outdated, contradictory info out there regarding practically every facet of this hobby. I was hoping I could get a couple things cleared up...
I setup this shelving for my work area and currently have 12 quarts of rye berries in a sgfc that were inoculated with MS on 8/23,6 of which are starting to show the first signs of growth. They look a little on the dry side but this is my first try with grain so what the hell do I know?! My questions are as follows:
1. Should I just let them colonize on the shelf without the sgfc? 2. Should I leave the cover off until spawning to my monotub? 3. I'm noc'ing up some brf cakes today, should I replace the tape after or should the verm barrier be sufficient to stave off contams? Sorry for the shitty pics (phone camera'd)

1+2)They can colonize wherever you please; no need to be in anything, sgfc or otherwise. 3) The verm barrier SHOULD be enough, but micropore tape can only help.
As an addendum to the first two, they need adequate GE, via your lid design, tyvek, whatman filter, synthetic filter disks. In addition they do benefit (not required) from 12/12 light cycles as myc has a circadian rhythm. Lastly temps should be in the range of 70-75°F.

Thanks Thadeous,
I'm thinking that the sgfc and grill cover may be inhibiting GE a bit so I'll remove them and expose the jars to the natural light that comes in during the daytime.
This is the lid tek I'm using (Tyvek/Band-aids,RTV)
As for the PF Jars Maybe I'll do a side-by-side with tape and no tape as I have a feeling that the tape along with fine-grade verm didn't provide for enough GE as they took forever to get going.

I think the micropore tape is designed to be breathable; oxygen molecules are tiny compared to bacteria. But it would be an interesting experiment nevertheless!
The lids look solid. I use cut up pieces of SFD siliconed on both sides of the lid. They are badass because they can get wet and wont wick in contaminates. They have a pore size of 2 micrometers. In addition I have healable injection ports, though silicone works just fine.
I would ditch the grill cover all together.

I have to get me some of those SFD's!! You really can't argue with benefits on grain jars alone. I tried this tek because I had most of the stuff lying around the house but have already noticed issues with the tyvek/band-aids coming loose after pc'ing.
As for the grill cover, I figured it'd take the place of a black trash bag when colonizing my monotub unless I'm misunderstanding the purpose (to keep it dark or combat contams?) But if there's no firect benefit I'll return it. That's $10 that could be better spent on something else.

Yeah they pay dividends. You don't even need foil to PC!
I would return it. The darkness thing is old news, and the lid is closed, so contams aren't really making their way in. Actually, I've never done monotubs, but I think that the holes are taped over during colonization. In addition to negating the need for a trash bag, the tape raises the CO2 levels inside the mono, which the myc enjoys and keeps it from pinning before you want it to. The polyfil gets put in after colonization is complete for FAE.

"Cuz waaaiting is the harrrdest part"
I'm trying to practice patience but it ain't easy lol now that I've seen germination I'll check every 3-4 days...
The poly-fill is still in there from when I first made the tub, it will 0e removed and the holes taped prior to spawning.
Thadeous, does pc'ing without foil lead to moisture issues at all?
twisted,I can see them fine...i know the site has had some issues with images, avatars and such as of late.

Not with SFDs! They get wet, but water is unable to pass through them on the molecular level. Thus, contaminates don't get through, nor water.
