These look like wonderful books.
Bukowski=so simple he's genius.
and of course Vonegutt(sp?) always strikes a chord.
I haven't heard of most of Bivalves books but they look good.
I like reading the synopsis' of stories sometimes.
(Which is what "Steps" is about basically.)
...looking for the variations on the "seven storylines" theme.

ole.

Cold Mountain - Charles Frazier
The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver

Those are two recent books I've loved - both coming out of America. It seems that that's where all the real writing talent is just now.

Cold Mountain in particular is outstanding. Frazier's writing is unique - there's a lot of beauty there.

Don't ask me to list any classics cos that's way too hard to pick and choose... but obiously Dickens and Elliot would be up there.

"It seems that that's where all the real writing talent is just now."

that is the most ridiculous comment ive ever heard in my life.

first off, because its wrong, secondly, if one nationality dominates literature RIGHT NOW, it is canadian, and no, that isnt an ethnocentric viewpoint.

for example, out of the six finalists for "the bookers prize", 3 were canadian, that is a total over-representation if one takes into account we only have a population of 30 million.

lol Calm down, mate. From what I've read, the best stuff is coming from America. Just cos it's in the Booker Prize doesn't mean it's good. Half of the stuff that wins awards is crap.

Name me a Canadian writer better than Charles Frasier. And I'll happily read.
