OK, so I will just upload a bunch of fish pics that I have instead of one per post. I find that of the three species of Marlin we catch, pictures of Striped Marlin always come up the best. They're such photogenic animals!! lol

Holding a 200lb Striped Marlin for release, note the hook being in the corner of the jaw. We use circle hooks with baits which ensure the fish is hooked only in the mouth and not anywhere internally. Makes them a great hook for tag and release fishing

Reaching out for the leader on a 220lb fish, note the beautiful lit up colours in the petoral fin and the stripes

A 240lb Striped Marlin being revived on a tow rope for release

Little 180lb fella being held alongside for a picture

I'm loving all your fish shots Jordy, excellent work, looks like a lot of fun (and a lot of work )
Biggest fish I've caught was a estimated 600lb nurse shark, and a 220lb goliath grouper. I don't do much off shore fishing.

Jordy, I'm with Tmethyl, keep all the offshore fishing shots coming.  I've done onshore fishing but have never got to go out to sea and battle the ancients of the deep.  One day hopefully.

Thanks guys!!

I've been privileged enough to do it for a very long time and have seen hundreds of billfish. It's always something I recommend any fisherman try at least once before they die, even if the gamefishing bug doesn't bite you it is always a memorable day on the water!

Tmethyl, that's a hell of a nurse shark!! My biggest shark was a Tiger Shark estimated around 1000lb but it wasn't what we were chasing. My biggest personal achievement is a 650lb Blue Marlin on 30lb tackle that I caught when I was 17 years old after a brutal 4 hour battle. So you're not far behind!!

I'll have a dig through the old collection later and see what else I have to upload. If you guys want to check it out, I've got a youtube channel as well with a number of gamefishing videos.

Couple of pics I have posted in other threads but not this one (I think):

300lb Blue Marlin I caught in February on 50lb tackle, had a massive adrenalin dump during the fight and was throwing up over the side whilst fighting the fish on full drag and thumb pressure hahaha.

146lb Big eye Tuna, it was the first one caught in over 25 years on a skirted lure in the middle of the day. The last one caught was only 1/3 the size and it's only the 5th or 6th officially on record to be caught off Sydney. Made big headlines:

The only fish I've personally taken in nearly ten years, a little 165lb Striped Marlin that got hooked through the eye. We wanted to release this fish but the hook wound was so bad that the fish wouldn't be able to feed properly so we elected to take it home and eat it. We didn't take it to the weigh station like most boats do to show it off and stroke their ego to get some points for their seasonal competition.

35lb Mahi Mahi I caught when I was a youngster

A fish that was landed on a boat I was fishing on a couple seasons ago. It was not my choice to take this fish as I was only a deckie that day and not in charge of anything. Usually I make the call and it's release 100% of the time. Ended up weighing 519lb

I already traced his IP address, sent a private investigator to confirm his whereabouts and purchased a ticket to Sydney.
Beat you to it Father.

Ahahaha I'm actually in Melbourne guys, I just fly up to Sydney very often to go chase Marlin and other gamefish. But certainly make sure you guys look me up if you're here between January and April, that's prime time for billfish off Sydney. Pretty sure I would be able to help you guys tangle with a nice Marlin :feelsgoodman:

Just out of curiosity, what is the point of catch and release? Seems like you're going through loads of work to catch that fish, I'd want to eat his ass for sure.

I guess it's no different than me spending hours hunting for mushrooms and then not even collecting any for the table. Fun is fun.

Ran-D (beware, this might get a little lengthy - it's cos I'm passionate)

Have you ever heard the saying that the chase is better than the catch? With fishing for species like Marlin, it really rings true. The hours spent trolling for nothing, the anticipation that at any moment a fish that weighs more than the crew combined could eat a lure from behind your boat. You LITERALLY start hearing and seeing things.
Then when the moment arrives and you hook up, you see it race along the surface whilst it rips hundreds of yards of heavy line off your reel in a matter of seconds - usually spending more time out of the water than in it. Then it's a battle of wills until either the fisherman, the fish or the line breaks. You have no idea how many grown men I have seen brought to their knees by a Marlin.
I've had many guys come onboard and want to kill a fish to take home; only to then go home with no fish for the family, but a huge grin from ear to ear after watching their biggest ever catch swim away relatively no worse for wear. You do build a respect for the fish after battling one.

Another reason I like to release Marlin is because out of all the apex predators that I could catch; they are the most ideal candidate for release because of how they are naturally designed. A marlin has a large, rounded bill on their upper jaw that extends for a fair distance. This makes an ideal handle for holding a fish next to the boat, de-hooking, tagging, reviving and release (see one of my previous posted pictures). That's why I like to use circle hooks with bait instead of traditional J hooks. They only lodge in the corner of the fishes mouth and prevents internal hook ups in the organs, gills etc - something J hooks were notorious for.

Another reason I don't like to take Marlin is because they have a higher trophic spot on the animal kingdom pyramid than smaller species which essentially means that their natural numbers aren't as high. This does not mean they are in danger going extinct, it just means that there's more small fish in the ocean than big fish.

The main reason I release Marlin is because I want my children to be able to enjoy the same fishery that I have enjoyed for most of my life. I can't expect that to happen if I go and kill every Marlin I catch and luckily most other gamefisherman here in Australia share the exact same attitude. In the 90's it was a kill-only fishery and we did bring our fair share of Marlin back to the dock and the fishery suffered for years. After attitudes changed and competitions changed regulations to more points for tag and release in 2000, most boats started seeing fish in good numbers again only a few years later with most boats releasing their catches. The 03/04 Marlin season was an absolute thumper of a season and from then on it's been gravy.

I felt sad when we had to take the 165lb Striped Marlin back home because of a mortal hook wound, that's why I didn't string it up on a set of scales for everyone to see. I paid it the respect of taking it home in the privacy of my boat and using everything of the fish for food. I kept the bill as a reminder to not get another one ever again. Nowadays I have cameras set up all around the boat so I get enough angles of the fish where I can make a nice video to remember and happily let the fish go knowing that he is being tracked by marine biologists for the benefit of the species. It's better than the old way of remembering a fish; a picture of someone standing next to the fish hanging by it's tail at the weigh station.

As far as being a fucked up ordeal, I'm not entirely sure I agree with that. It's probably a slightly stressful ordeal for them, but I use as many harm minimalization tactics as possible in order to reduce the mortality rates for fish. I've had tagged fish re-caught, so I must be doing something right.

Although when you do take a fish during a competition, you get the gamefish girls who will stand with you and the fish for a photo. Just a pity the girls had already changed out of their bikinis when the boat got back to the dock (the 146lb big eye tuna).

Thanks mate!!

It's interesting to see how a lot of gamefisherman are conservationalists towards billfish. To the regular person it would seem like it is something that isn't possible, but it was a drive by recreational gamefisherman that got a ban on the targeting of Billfish by commercial boats in Australian waters. I know a few marine biologists who are gamefisherman as well, the two worlds co-exist beautifully.

So who is flying over here first to come chase a few 'beakies' with me then?? hahaha

It may be a real possibility for me within the next month.
I'll definitely let you know if I get the time and funds.

Also, Jordy, I wanted to ask what else you guys catch out there?
Are there many undesirable fish which attack your rigs instead of just Bills?
I know when I go grouper fishing there is like 10 species of fish which we catch in between the Groupers.

How do the bills taste? Are they comparable to any other fish?

Tmethyl,

Unfortunately the season has just ended and wont fire up again until January. Just a bit too late!!

Offshore, we get a big range of species. Obviously there's all 3 Marlin species, but there's also plenty of Mahi Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Mako Sharks, Tiger Sharks, Yellowtail Kingfish, Broadbill Swordfish and even the odd Wahoo here and there. You'll also get some tropical species wander down the coast from the north if the water is warm enough so Sailfish and Spearfish can be a possibility at certain times of the year. Not bad when you consider they can all be caught within 30 miles of the iconic city of Sydney. If you wanted to talk inshore species, I don't have enough time to name them all hahaha

As far as eating billfish, it depends on the species. Blue Marlin fight so hard that the lactic acid turns their flesh to jelly so I never eat Blue Marlin. Black Marlin are not bad when they are small, but there can be some major inconsistencies due to the fact they eat just about anything.
Striped Marlin are the best eating out of the 3 species, 99% of their diet is Blue Mackerel (We call them Slimy Mackerel or 'Slimies' here). It makes their flesh very similar to Tuna because of that and it tastes good.
I'd still rather catch a few Mahi Mahi or a Tuna to eat, they're fine dining!!
