Today I went to a place in north FL called Paynes Prairie (I also covered much of the nearby areas) The place is loaded with unique and diverse wildlife (wild horses, and bison, and wild cows), and even more diverse plant life(mostly wetland plants). I'll just post what I found starting from AM to PM, and add some descriptions as I go. I covered much ground.
Was too early for the the dog to even wake up when I left

Arriving now to a swampy marsh with an abundance of wetland plants

(macro shot of the flowers in the above image)

Another flower of the same genus of the above

Interesting story here, these are wild horses. Not exactly natives, but these are descendants of horses that Spanish explorers left in FL upon it's discovery in the 1600's. They're Spanish horses, which have made a nice home at Paynes, and have done so for many generations. There is about 60 of them total, they hang out in matriarchal groups of 6-15 and each group sticks to a certain territory. Seems like ordinary horses, but they are so much more. I was lucky to find them, they roam freely.

Gator, egret, egret. Crowded.

(King fisher bird)

Baby momma

I found the Bison, they were extremely far away though. In the direct center of this pic you can see 6 Bison.. barely. It was easier to spot them in real time because they were moving.

Canopy view from inside the above tower

Towards the end of the day I stopped for a swim, this time at a different spring.

Heres my daughter, as a ghost. Done using 100 ISO and long exposures.

Back home

Well it's nearly 3am.

Thank you all.

I went to the beach tonight, tried to make it before sunset but was a little late, my goal was to shoot the nuclear power plant with some long exposures. Here is what I got:

Curious night air, breeze.. stars.

How did you get that shot from what looks to be underground?
Were you in a cave?

Yes it's a lava tube!! It was about 75 degrees out but once you move a foot into the tube it drops to freezing temps!!
Quote:
This mile-long lava tube cave was formed roughly 700,000 years ago by molten rock that erupted from a volcanic vent in nearby Hart Prairie. The top, sides and bottom of the flow cooled and solidified first, after which the insides of the lava river continued to flow emptying out the present cave.
Ample evidence of how the tube was born is written in the rocks of which it is formed. Small wave-like undulations in the floor are the remains of ripples frozen in the last trickle of molten rock that flowed from the cave. Stone icicles hanging from the ceiling show where a final blast of volcanic heat caused the rock to partially re-liquefy and drip.
Dress appropriately when you come to visit, with warm clothes and sturdy shoes. The cave is as cool as 42° even in summer, and you may even find some ice inside. The rocks are always sharp and slippery, too. Bring two or three sources of light, in case one happens to fail, it can be very dark one mile from the nearest light source.
Portions of the cave which were defaced by graffiti, have been recently cleaned up. Today's more environmentally aware visitors take better care of such a unique resource and report vandals when they see them.

You guys been puttin in work on this thread in my absence. I NEED TO GO TO FUCKING FLORIDA. That stuff hanging from all the trees just gives me the best vibes and feels in the world. I just wanna be there! I think it's called Old Man's Beard or something? It was everywhere in SC when I was down there Here's a few shots from that trip:

Congaree River. Positively mind blowing in person, the picture doesn't do it even remote justice.
Gettin to be night time at camp
night hike through the swamp! Man, so many good memories from that trip.

Old mans beard is actually a fungal lichen, in my pics you're seeing Spanish moss (a plant in the bromliad family), basically an air plant. Good to se you AM.

This some good stuff. The sea gull picture is ridoodoodiculous. It exudes some sort of emotion, but I'm not sure what.
