Pray for rain! PNW ... Was a pretty cool wet June... So so July... Dry August... A good wet September would be nice for liberty caps and cyans!
Been checking sites around the area every few weeks... Not see an active yet... Ended up putting cyan spores out at another 20 locations though.
Mysterious... Great find... Reminds me that I need to get back out this weekend!

I already like this thread way more than the other one
Your fibs popped up much earlier than the small patch I photographed last year, so they might start going soon.
Start checking your areas people

indeed, bfogg, I totally missed that other PNW thread.
since it's ovoids, I wouldn't quite call it normal like the stuntzii's in this thread. But it does look like ovoids are steadily on the increase in the PNW and are doing much better than California, probably because of the wider temp range up there and a bit more wet in summer
p ovoideocystidiata is relatively new on the west coast with first find in california in 2004. There's probably 2 or 3 sub species with their own characteristics and habits and only time will tell.
Maybe another 10 years down the road and mid summer time finds will become the new normal, who knows?
That's the one thing about ovoids on the west coast. They don't quite follow the traditional west coast seasonal fungi pattern

well, San Francisco is sort of on the edge of the PNW, and south of here is more Mediterranean and north along the Redwood Coast it's a rainforest. That's why we have our own thread. Ovoid's have been seen in the bay Area every year since 2004, and it's also springtime here, but also sometimes in january and a sub species fruits in fall. And sometimes even the spring time ovoids fruits in fall. It's just more random in California. We'll get odd weather patterns that brings out more ovoids in the winter, but summer is usually bone dry, in fact our fire season is just getting started here BTW, Stuntzii is pretty rare in the Bay Area, but I've seen it before. My guess is that bay Area ovoids is less than 1% compared to the cyan/friscoa complex then again, we have a lot more friscosa here than washington, so yes it's not the PNW..Far enough away and 5-10 degrees warmer, and a month behind, but we also don't get snow here either so it lasts beyond December tough to say if ovoids really like the PNW better or there's just more people looking or what. But also look at the native habitat which is Ohio, and they have regular snow and hot summers, so the PNW would be a little closer to that than Cali
could have something to do with it. One theory at least has it that ovoids go for a long range pattern with a seasonal snow, then a warm spring wet summer, type thing
edit : I forgot to mention that a sub species, or related type of ovoids have been found in southern california near Los Angeles, which is about the only active found down there in formerly desert habitat. just bizarre
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9175403/fpart/1/vc/1
that type also occurs in the San Francisco bay Area and mostly fruits in fall here. I don't know if it ever officially got a new name, but it's been checked by Alan Rockefeller and if it isn't a new species, it's pretty close to the conical ovoids we've been seeing in the PNW
We might be able to trace dna, and species and name it and ID, but it doesn't really tell us much about the habit and the behavior of this odd species complex
That'll probably take a few years yet

Nice stuntzii. In the bottom picture I noticed that they seam to be consistently umbonate. These look a bit like Psilocybe fimetaria. Not saying they are but it might be worth taking a closer look.

Definetly not man, P fimetaria would be growing from horse dung. P stuntziis arnt consistently anything shape wise, they have so many different forms and even can be a wood lover or a grass lover. Those are P stuntzii 100%.

What a great way to kick off the season for me! I've found another summer-fruiting blue ringer patch, although it is struggling compared to the other one, it is a cool discovery and I hope will flourish more as the season goes on. Sadly, I was on a bike ride and was only able to snap a quick couple shots of it. Also note the patch was quite small, with mushrooms growing out of only the areas that receive shade throughout most of the day:

Gill Shot, the blue is kind of faded out of the annulus due to dying:

Also checked on the other patch when I went on a walk, I can never seem to get many good pictures from that patch....
Probably because I suck at photography, I'm getting better though:
Nice Bundles:

I tried taking multiple macro shots..only ended up with one semi-decent one, with dog butt in the background.

Psylosymonretuns-
Psilocybe fimetaria does typically grow from dung, but it has been reported growing from grass areas with rich or well fertilized soils. I realize that Psilocybe stuntzii is quite polymorphic in nature and I do not doubt that those are Psilocybe stuntzii. Still the most notable macroscopic difference between Psilocybe stuntzii and Psilocybe fimetaria is that Psilocybe stuntzii is typically not umbonate and Psilocybe fimetaria is typically umbonate. Therefore whenever I see a group of stuntzii that are all consistently umbonate I cant help but wonder if they might be fimetaria going unnoticed.

Excellent.. I was in Snohomish last weekend for a wedding.. Looked all over and found nothing, except some type of claviceps in a park in north Seattle.. Stoked for that but stoked for the season even more.,. Great finds and happy hunting!

Nice finds mysterious! One question if you dont mind; will stuntzii fruit only near sprinkers with this dry spell going on, or can they be found other places because of the morning dew?
Keep up the good work bros!
And whats up with having two threads for 2012 actives.... haha
