WBS shelf life after soak and simmer

I soaked and simmered enough grains for my current plan and I never factored in how long it takes for the PC to cool. I'm left over with a decent amount of grain but I would like to use it instead of wasting it or tossing it to the birds. My job doesn't allow for much time so I was trying to do as many as I can and I just goofed on the initial plan.
I'm following monstermich's tek with a simmer and used a 5 Gal pale with the top cut out and screen for drainage.
After using the search I found out its ok for a day but what if I leave the extra grain in the pale and use plastic wrap in place of the drainage to keep it moist.
How long do I have? I know ill be battling the germination time of the seeds but I just dont have the time at this moment. to prep more grain
Any straight forward answers from someone with some real insight to this hobby would really be a blessing
Thanks Happy Shroomin

Ive searched this same thing before, and the general consensus is- Use ASAP! You can leave it overnight in the fridge but 2 days or longer and you're pushing your luck. Keep in mind sterilized WBS jars or bags last for 2weeks (or longer) in a cool dark place. Prepare only what you can pc that day, store the PC'd jars and do more when you can. Like i said you have about 2weeks to use your jars after pcing, just use that time to get all your jars done when possible.

i had rye berries sit out for 3 days after a soak and simmer. they colonized fine.
on the other hand, i had one batch sit out for 5 days and it was covered in cobweb and trich
as long as they haven't molded over or germinate. fermentation is fine. does WBS ferment? haha
i've also had jars sit for 6 weeks that were fine

I had a bunch of jars left out for 3 days. They didn't germinate but were pretty molded over with cobweb. I PC'd them as normal and inoculated. Spores have germinated and they appear to be colonizing well...

3 days or so tops in my experience. but you want to gague it yourself. if there is a very strong fermentation smell than you will have bacteria on your grain, and once bacteria starts eating all of the nutrients in your grain there isn't much for myc to munch on. pressure cooking will kill the bacteria but depending on how much fermentation has occurred your myc growth will be effected. if it's a small amount then you'll be fine, but if it is a large amount then you will see drastic to total growth stall.

^ I think you need more experience.
I wouldn't wait any longer than 24 hour's.

I know shit happen's. I know it'll last longer sometime's. If you wait longer than 24-36 hour's, then your grain is going to begin to ferment. You also see cobweb and other contam's after 36 hour's.
Do whatever you guy's want.

Been there with the excess grain a time or two....
WBS will last about 36 hours in the fridge before it begins to ferment.....to prevent germination all you need to do is simmer it and store in the fridge.
But, if you can jar it all up and pressure cook it, properly prepared jars will last a month in storage and still be good for use.... I g2g'd three jars recently that failed to germinate via spores and they had been sitting in my closet for a good three weeks....finished without a hitch, used to g2g more jars last night.
Good luck op

i have had successful grows with grain that was soaked for a weekend, being it was my only grain and i was broke at the time i gave it a shot. they stunk bad and had fermented quite a bit but after pcing and noc with a ms syringe they still worked, not as good as the rest of the normal 24 hour soak grains that i have used in the past but they did work none the less. i believe i pressure cooked them for about 15 minutes longer than i normally do (90 mins) which probably had no effect but at the time i was alot newer to growing so i thought it might help.
bottom line is this... fermentation is when the endospores in the grain start to devour the nutrients in the grain, the longer they are allowed to kill the nutrient supply of the grain the less nutrients the myc will have to use to their advantage when they are in the jars.
people have had freakishly crazy things happen and just because it can or has been done doesn't mean you should do it. but if you have no other option then i guess try it out. i would suggest to buy you some more bird seed and do a 20-24 hour soak and do it right.

Prepared what I could and my PC was giving me issues with the pressure gauge. Go figure just wasnt ment to be. I guess it got banged around a bunch in my last move. No big deal just gonna go back to beginning and take my time PC and fridge them. Thank you

I only read the first three post. Germination of the grain will not be a problem since you simmered it. As for time in storage. The seed will still absord water if it is stored in water. I would give it two days max until bacteria/molds take off again. Unless you store it in the fridge, which you might get a week. Look at it as leftover food. Would you eat it a day later if you left it out on the counter? Would it eat it a week later if you left it in the fridge? Week max if in the fridge. Seed is cheap, a lot cheaper than a few weeks of your time to find out you screwed up bad and have a huge contam issue
-------------------- Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I figured that after 2 days moisture content would be thrown off. The fridge is a dry place after all.
