growing tip! KEEP THE HEAT

From my years of growing pot and mushrooms I have discovered a way to keep a constant flow of bottom evenly spred heat. This is actually very easy to do wiether ur waiting for seeds to germinate or your myclilium to fully take over the medium you use here is a simple trick. The first step is u need to find and older set ot christmas lights the ones that go on your roof (Note LED lights don't give off enough heat) like I said the older ones. Secondly you need sand any kind will do from ur backyard to the playground it will work. If u don't have ny on hand go play golf and bring a 2l bottle and fill it up. Next you gotta find a caedboard or plastic container that will hold said sand. Put the lights evenly across the bottom of the container or box evenly. Make sure they are as flat as possible. Next pour an even layer of sand enough to cover said lights in the bottom of the container completly cover lights. Next turn the lights on for 15 20 mins to warm up the sand the sand should be warm to the touch like when ur walking on the beach in the middle of the day. Now you have your bottom heat source without paying the 50 bucks to order a heat mat. Questions? Comments?

Unless you are in a VERY cold place, you don't need heat for mushrooms. Just whatever temperature you find comfortable will be just fine for the shrooms. I believe that needing heat (as well as 'darkness') has been debunked.

People are comfortable in the temperature they are used to which is why I think people should talk in temperature ranges instead of using vague terms like room or comfortable temperature. It's 50F right now in my house and I'm perfectly comfortable yet quart jars of cubensis take a month to colonize when I don't put them in a propagator.

Yea I have amazonian in the process at the moment. They are in quart jars and my fist batch took almost a month n a half to fully colinize so I tryed this trick out cut the time in half. I only learned about this meathod earlyer this year and both my crops have benifited from this.

This thread was moved from Advanced Mycology.
Reason: Off topic in advanced mycology. Moved to cultivation.
Normal indoor room temperature will give the best ratio of fast colonization to reduced contaminants. It's true most fungi will grow somewhat faster at the upper end of the normal room temp range, but this also means mold fungi will especially grow fast, and they're already much faster than our mushroom mycelium.
A cooler room will result in slower colonization but a higher success rate. RR

I've also found cooler temps produce denser fruits too.

I completely agree about "room temp" here in southern New Mexico it is still 82f and only 31rh and that's even with the swamp cooler on high running 24 hours a day, this is my "room temp". Not ideal conditions for the mushroom hobby.
Challenges sure are fun!

I'm in Canada and find room temperature is fine, unless its the depths of winter, then I just use a T.i.T with a fish tank heater (automatic temperature adjustment)

Good point. 50F, I would be freezing to death...lol....It's 82F inside and 88F outside and I am perfectly comfortable but my grow room is air conditioned to 74F

Christmas lights plus sand? Sounds like a fire hazard man. Have you done this? I'd be nervous

have you ever played golf before? It tends to be just a bit more expensive than sand.

Yes I do it all the time actually. And as for a fire hazard not very likly due to the fact that sand usually doesn't set on fire with out a propellant....lol next time u go camping try to put sand on ur fire I can almost garentee 99 percent that the fire will be smothered way before the sand catches fire and as for the whole golf thing. Where I live you really don't have to play they just tend to have huge piles of it laying around near where I live. If that's not the case go buy it. Take it from the beach whatever u gotta do dude. I'd prefer not to spend the 40 bucks on a heat mat I'd rather use my brain and come up with something that anyone can do with a few simple things
