Wtf trich spores in coir??
    #16758170 - 08/30/12 04:06 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

So every attempt ive done with coir as a bulk spawn has gone to shite, very fast and hard green mold infections every goddamn time.

So i talked to a guy today and he told me that some brands of coco coir used for gardening actually has trich spores in them to help the soil fight of funghi?!

Never heard anything about this but sounds awful since i bought like 8bricks of this shit.

Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Yes, it is true. A few brand's do have trich already in the coir. Some will say it on the package. You should try pet store's for ZooMed coir.

Could i maybe do some kind of bleach or alchohol wash to get rid of this or is my coir useless for shrooms now?

Im quite certain this is the case with the coir i have since every damn tray ive made with it has been infested with mold very quickly.

This is why we pasteurize or sterilize coir.  Nearly all of it intended for growing plants has trichoderma added, as is well known.

Pick up some Zoo Med Eco Earth from your local pet store... usually
used as reptile bedding. I think thats what most of us use around here.
And I'm unsure, but I don't think it has the added Trich.

But pasurizing it should kill the trichs right?

Cause ive always nuked mine for the recomended time and still had mold issues.

Like i said i got 8bricks of this crap and i wont buy any new for awhile.

Guess i will have to get a few pounds of hpoo to store during the vinter times now :P

You could always do a google search on your brand and probably find out. And if it does have it added you might want to goto more effort to kill it since youre unwilling to buy new stuff.

I got 3 bricks of the eco earth stuff at pet smart for like 8$ so it's not expensive.

Correct.  Given your inoculant is clean and your sterile procedures are good, pasteurizing correctly will kill and knock back any invader spores present in pre-pasteurized substrate materials giving your mycelium has a huge head start in colonizing the bulk substrate materials.  Any remaining invader spores will get delt with by the mycelium and the beneficial microbes left behind by the pasteurization process before they can recover and germinate and so forth.

Ok i see, then i might be able to use this stuff anyway, just not for casings etc.

Anyway i think i might had fruited most of my spawned boxes to early anyway so that could be part of the problem.

Thanks alot for the help guys.

What are your pasteurization methods?  I follow these and it has worked without a hitch.

That's not pasteurization.

My pasteurization method is to process/shred my substrate materials (Coir and horse manure + gypsum and vermiculite), mix it, hydrate it to 72%, load it into spawn bags and use water as my heat transferring medium not letting the water in the pot exceed 155F then beginning a timer set for an hour and a half once the center of substrate materials reach 130F gauged using a cheap ass meat thermometer from like the dollar store or something.

I am pretty sure steps 1 through 7 are indeed pasteurization, similar to what you described in your post.  Corrections welcome.

Since it uses boiling water it's pasteurization with some parts being sterilized too. It works alright for coir though but some substrates would be better prepared with a more controlled pasteurization.
