First time farmer
    #16756321 - 08/29/12 07:42 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

I have a "friend" that just decided to start a mycology hobbie. He just purchased the Ultimate grow and incubator kit from Midwest Grow kits and three syringes of spores which are blue meanies (cube I think), koh samui, and lipa yai. He was wondering if anyone could give him any tips and pointers before he begins and for support and guidance through the process. I promise to post pics as soon as the supplies arrive and throughout the process

The tips you could receive are endless to be honest.  Without knowing exactly whats going on in your kit (such as substrate) the best I can offer is to keep the temperatures, at all stages, around 70-75 F.

There is LOADS to be learned in this hobby.  Be sure to use the search function at the top right and do you research before posting a thread as I can assure you that should you encounter an issue, you will not have been the first to do so.
:goodluck:

My substrate is BRF and I'm growing on vermiculite. I've looked into casing and flushes and such and I'm not sure if I should just use the mycelium as it is when I birth it or should I use a casing method? And if I case it how do I get multiple flushes? How do I get multiple flushes if I leave it how it's birthed? I've heard of people draping the mycelium cakes in thin strips of corrugated cardboard? What does this do?

What would happen if I inoculated one jar with two or more different strains of spores?

growing on vermiculite?  That doesn't quite make sense to me.  What do you mean?

Just looked at the kit now.  Research the PF tek on here or on the web.  That's pretty much what they have you set up to do.  Most people will, after your jars are colonized, dunk them in water (I don't remember how long; more research for you ) then then roll them in vermiculite prior to placing them in the fruiting chamber.  This acts as a casing layer.  After each flush you just repeat the process of dunking and rolling.  Never heard of the cardboard thing, so I would avoid it.

Just googled "shroomery dunk and roll"; the first result:
http://www.shroomery.org/10253/PF-TEK-Update-Dunk-and-Roll

I would keep one strain per jar.  I honestly don't know the technicalities of what would happen, but one might think they would compete for nutrients.  So don't do that.  lol.

Also idk how the different strains vary in temperature and humidity conditions. Is it going to be different for each of my strains or is it pretty much generalized for each?

I would buy 12 jars, whip em up and use 1 syringe.  They all have the same conditions.  Keep em in the 70s.

It will be the same for all you SUB-strains.  The strain of all the ones you mentioned is psilocybe cubensis, the "types" are sub-strains and don't really vary much in terms of potency, though may have subtle growth differences.

the best advice i can give you after doing three different BRF batches this summer is to mist HEAVILY.

the first batch i misted at least twice a day heavily. the reason i only did it twice a day is i wanted the cakes time to evaporate between misting. on these cakes i had good pinsets and good clusters and flushes.

the second round i got lazy and fanned, but didn't mist as much. i got a few good flushes but they weren't as big as the first time.

this last round i have been misting heavily at night then again in the morning. i'm getting a large number of pins per cake and meaty fruits.

good luck, and make sure to take good notes at least every other day so you can look back and see what you did right and what you did wrong.
