Anyone notice a increase in colonization time by switchin to double end verm? My first batch, I did a few jars double end verm, and these jars I did do, are more then like 50% colonized while the other jars are being super sluggish (a week and theres roughly anywhere from 5 to 15% coloniztion on the rest, now my double end jars, there probably about half or more done like I said.... anyone else have this

Interesting. Do you just put 1/2in of verm at the bottom of the jar, fill with substrate and then put 1/2in of verm on the top?

i have a question y r u putting verm. in ur jars? the verm. goes after its out of the jar u tryin sum new?? that would just seem a waste because verm. sitting on the bottom not mixed in would just take up space.so doing that with lets say a pint jar u put a lil verm. on the bottom then substrate the another layer(witch is suposta be there) on top? sounds like a waste of space

Hmm maybe im so newbie I didnt understand what double end verm technique is. I put verm in jars at the bottom, before i steralized them, half inch verm on top and bottom. The jars with verm on bottom layer have shown rapid growth towards the bottom region of the cake. The cakes also seem to be maybe shrinking a little, so there is even a 1/8th of a inch of free air in the bottom of some jars, maybe this extra air allows for more oxygen in the bottom?

Since verm. is non-nutritive, I'm guessing that any increased rate of growth is because maybe the verm is easier to grow through than the brf/verm combo? That's cool, but you are decreasing the amount of nutrients by putting plain verm instead of brf/verm.. Right? It might be the extra air in the bottom that's allowing for faster growth, kind of like when flipping a PF jar. That's my guess..

Yes it?s faster. There is more air in the jar and the substrate isn?t resting against the glass on the bottom and can colonize faster. Hmmm...if wasted space means faster colonizing I?d waste the space.

Wasted space = less nutrients, I agree though waiting is sometimes not very pleasant

You could just make one extra jar to account for the loss of nutrients and then you'd have the same amount of nutrient material and increased colonization speed.

I'd bet it's what another guy said in here, and that it's the additional air for the mycelium.
